So, I'm gunna get a new laptop for my birthday hopefully. (Which is in June btw) but the problem is I don't know the first thing about getting a good one or where the best site/store to get it from is. So any help on deciding what to get would be appreciated.
For gaming, get an Alienware laptop. For general purposes, get a Gateway with Windows 7.

Since you stated you will not be using the laptop for hardcore gaming, 350-400 USD is sufficient for a decent system that will last you years.
Asus makes some juicy laptops at a reasonable price.
If you're not looking for a gaming laptop, I'd personally go for a Mac (quiet you Apple haters, I've got my fanboy stick all ready to hand out a beating). Also, if you're a college student or know someone who is a teacher you can get a discount from Apple.com (not to mention they usually throw in a free iPod touch if you buy during the summer).
A MacBook ($999 without the discount) or a MacBook Pro ($1199 without the discount) might be pricier than low or mid-level PC laptop, but they're super reliable and I don't know what I would do on a computer without iLife. Not only that, but iWork is head and shoulders better than Microsoft Office for a fraction of the price (it can also open and save Microsoft Office files, so no worries there).
Places to buy are, of course, Apple.com, The Apple Retail Stores, certain Best Buy stores, and a few other authorized retailers.
Toshiba is great, reliable and really cheap. (One of the only Computer Companies that still give out free Recovery Disk CD's and Inbuilt Recovery System... For those "Moments" you get a Virus or Crash the Shizzet out of it.)
Thanks, I probably will need some help picking out the right one :P I know next to nothing about them

Good luck with your purchase.
