Why BioShock will be game of the year...
Lets hear it! Do you think this game is going to be the best we see this year? If so, tell us why.
If not, tell us which game could possibily be better (in your eyes).
From what little we know about the game, I think there are a few features that already look to propel BioShock to the front lines of FPS'. The AI, for instance. If all goes to plan I think that people will really dig the unique AI behaviour and the possibilities they bring in terms of interaction. The game definitely has the style to compete with the other games this year in the visuals category. In terms of story and story-telling, most people are already intrigued by BioShock's premise, but the game has to compete with the likes of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, and probably a few more I'm forgetting.
AND you have to compete with the zombie hords of Halo junkies... thats gonna be a tough one to get through to because they are multiplayer addicts. I enjoy FPS multiplayer too, but if BioShock brings all this that I've seen so far and more to the table, than the single player experience alone is gonna blow away any other single player experience out there this year.
I believe among the Gaming media, it will be highly praised akin to System Shock. I sincerely doubt though, that it can take on heavy metal franchises like Halo or Metal Gear in both sales and public hysteria.
Whether or not Bioshock will be the critic's game of the year or not is tough to determin, but I think its genuine original setting and ingenious gameplay scenario's are much more exciting than alot of what the competition is offering.
It all depends how things come together for the final product, im not going to stand on a pedestal declaring "Game of the Year!" until I have seen every subsystem of the game. I have great confidence in Irrational games though, so I know they will make it a game to remember.
BioShock is the best nominee for the GOTY award but there are a few more games on my list.
- Clive Barker's Jericho: do I really have to say why?
- Assassin's Creed: good idea, interesting gameplay/story
- Brother's in Arms: Hell's Highway: I loved the first two games, they were the best WW2 shooters IMO and the new game seems to be even better. you can really feel like you're really there in the war
- Unreal Tournament 3: I don't think I have to say much about this either
- STALKER: I'm not sure abot this one. I've heard/read/seen great things about this game but I'll have to see it for myself. And I'm a bit worried about the bugs and the optimization too.
I don't know much about Elveon and The Witcher yet but they might join the list later on too. And because I'm Hungarian I should mention Field Ops too, really original idea, I hope it will be a good game.
Oh, and why BioShock? Just watch the videos and you'll know.
While I'm quite certain it will be the game of the year for me, it won't be the game of the year for the masses. Halo 3, UT3 and other games will take that crown.
Half Life 2: Episode 2 may give it a run for the money - I'm giddy just thinking about it. Crysis might if the awards are heavily graphics-driven.
Single player, if it lives up to what it promises, will definitly get an award. But the fact that there is no multiplayer MAY hurt its chances. I dont really care for multiplayer, must say this b4 i get flamed, but after watching millions of reviews, some critics will nock off points for no multiplayer. I remember one critic saying every game should have multiplayer at this day in age. I personally like single player better then mutliplayer. multiplayer usualy gets repetivie quicker 4 me.
In terms of innovation, absolutely, and I think it should definitely be a critical hit (if you pardon the pun). As for game of the year— is that decided my the masses, or is there more to it than that?

If it's lacking in stealth features, or if the A.I. isn't fully optimised to support the stealth features the game does have, it could be a real let-down for a lot of people. If there are glitches or snafus in the stealth system it could really big time suck, and loose a lot of the kudos it should probably deserve from the reviewers.
For that reason I'd say that for a lot of people (who prefer stealth gameplay to the types of weaponry and combat offered by BioShock) Assassin's Creed could be a very close second, especially considering its innovations.
One of the things that interested me about SS2 and that now interests me about BioShock is its potential as a template for the adaption of the gaming experience to the players preferred style of play, but I'm worried that its stealth aspect won't be extensive enough to please the stealth fans.
In terms of the GOTY, if it's judged on innovation (which at least I think it should be) BioShock will probably win hands down (although Assassin's Creed does have some pretty awesome features).

I think that Bioshock should get it, though it is more likely Halo 3 will get that if you want to be realistic. But between the two, one will get FPS of the year, the other gets GOTY
For other games, Assassin's Creed will get Action Game of the year, and Mass Effect will win RPG of the year
But Bioshock will win SOMETHING, hopefully GOTY, which it deserves
The only saving grace of mp, imo is that you can have smarter people (than the AI) that you are playing with in a game like GRAW, but then you can also have idiots that get shot every yard
Not every 'game of the year' is a must-have. Also not every game that deserves that title gets it and vice versa. It's just a matter of whether BioShock will deliver something totally useless that masses will love for whatever reason (like Gravity Gun in Half-Life 2) or not.
As long as I like the game, I don't care what possible awards it'll get.
Well said. But for Irrationals/2K's sake, I hope it wins some awards and this spurs them on to be innovative like this again.
