Bad AI? I don't think so
Tonight AI surprised me once again. People keep on saying how the AI in Civ 5 sucks. Those who have spent time on this forum know what I'm talking about. Long story short, I witnessed some real Intelligence on AI's part again.
In the shot you can see London. It's not my capital city since I have renamed my first two cities. London here is my thir city in this game. Look at the shot, see the giant chain of mountains? Good. I drew red arrows on shot to mark routes. Upper red arrow demostrates the first path Russia used on military expedition to invade London.
! FULL SIZE PICTURE HERE !
I'm going for Cultural victory and level is Immortal, so I'm little behind tech-wise and the weakest military force on earth (very few units). Now You have to admit, city location is perfect for defending, river running right by helped me a lot on Russias three first waves of units. For those, Catherine used upper route. I lost 2 swordmen but that was it. My ships bombarding from sea and longbowmen we're enough to stop those waves. Have to admit though, I did break out sweat..
You can see Ship of the line near the upper arrow, placed there so I would know when the next wave should arrive. There was an eerie silence when I was anticipating Catherines next move.
To my surprise, I accidently noticed that Russia had changed tactict. There was huge amount of Lancers, Longswordmen and even cannons to the south of london. Some units got bombarded before it occured to me to take the screenshot, but there's even more coming. And upgraded ones too, not knights, swordmen and catapults but lancers, longswordmen and cannons!
Now, theres icepatch blocking southers route and I guess my ship was enough to force Cathy to change her tacticts. There's yet another explanation if you want to be optimistic about AI's smartness; AI LEARNED that northern route was no good, and decided to use southern route around the mountains next time! All and all, I was surprised and very happy to see some intelligence on AI's side once again!
I can predict few cool-story-bro's and "It was just dumb luck" replies to this post but it doesn't really matter since it's a fun game and I can't wait to continue it on Sunday.. wait a minute, what time it is? 6AM?!?! Oh god I have to get some sleep too!
Thanks for reading
Forgot to mention that initially I had a scout spying on southern route, but removed it after first wave of units arrived from north.. Maybe a mistake on my part since I almost got jumped on from behind!
Hmm... interesting. Is London the only city they launched an attack towards? Are you allied with that city-state to the south of your screenshot? There might be some other reasons, let's not jump to conclusions just yet. And isn't the southern route a tiny bit closer to Cathy's border by tile count?
London is only city under attack. My northern cities are on the edge of the world in Russias point of view, there's huge lanmasses to go around by sea vast space of no mans land to advance without emarking. Also I think she's scared of my ship of the lines and wont embark (something really has happened in the latest patches, AI wont embark to suicide anymore!)

So I'm guessing a new city, but can't be sure. I decided that the moment was perfect to savor and saved the game!
Sorry for my poor english.
Hmm... Cathy might be planning to move on to the west after taking London, towards that other city of yours. See how far west those lancers are?
It looks to me that AI makes smart moves as long as he has an overal advantage. clearly it will not atack you if you got stronger army nor it will try to do anything unless he gets an advantage.
I played continents where me an arabia were alone on one island, arabs were spaming setlers each few turns we were friends and I got stronger army(that's why he wanted to be a friend with me of course).
Then I figured out how smart AI could be
At once he got coal discovered! public scools etc... He was far ahed tehnologicaly, so the only way to stop him was took his capitol and biggest cities.
I got -20 happines after finishing a war an he still got more land then me and he still had better economy.
I've had a similar thing happen in a previous game.
The AI was attacking through a choke point to the north of one of my cities which I easily defended through 3 waves. After a while the AI changed their tactic and started attacking from the west which was much more open terrain albeit a less direct route to my city.
cool story bro. more of this would be nice. Though in fairness people don't always learn from history. Invade Russia, they said. It'll be fun in the winter, they said.
Aren't we about due for another invasion of Russia? It has been over half a century after all.

The 2nd piece of evidence was America set up their artillery and began bombarding the Arab destroyers. That is amazing! I had never seen moves done so well by the AI, in your case and mine! I can't wait till the AI gets even more difficult to attack in the Gods and Kings expansion.
By the way what type of map is this? Continent, Pangaea, Archipelago or some other type of map?
Right now I'm playing on a Huge Continents Plus map as Spain. I've only been to war twice with Washington, who never got his units close to my borders, or any of my units. I do have Mr. HasHisPoliticalMeetingsInABurningCity's exceptionally large empire between us, though...
