Big Daddies and their creation
My friend Jon and I have been hypothesizing heavily on the Big Daddies and how they're 'born'.
We've come up with some reasonable suggestions, but more than anything we're interested in the extremely 'personal' aspect of having one of the story 'paths' be to stumble across a laboratory of sorts, perhaps automated, and being modified. Your character would black out, and upon awakening stumble around a bit inside this room, where eventually you'd happen across a closet filled with one or two different models of the iconic and ever-distinct suit that makes up the Big Daddy's appearance.
We further spoke about this after spending a session viewing the screenshots on the Cult's website--and seeing a shot we'd seen before, albeit in a far higher resolution here.
"Look at that Rosie," I said. "Doesn't it look--I dunno, nervous?"
Something about that picture, the way the characters are stanced, has a distinct feel of the Little Sister examining the Big Daddy extremely carefully, perhaps gazing in the visor, to make sure he was "authentic".
Just a thought.
Discuss your thoughts on the idea of becoming a Big Daddy--it's too late to be implemented in the game if it isn't in there already, but it's fun to dream.
I'd be more than happy to discuss, but it's in the wrong forum. Maybe we could get a mod to take care of this so more people will see it?
That would be cool, but it might feel too similar to quake, which in turn felt like doom 3.. Thats what made me sick of Quake, it felt like Doom 4
Doctor Tenenbaum created the little sistes to harvest and manifest the Adam. He also built big daddies to protect them.
The Big Daddy creation myth as told by...
Quake IV: If you step into the wrong area, a really big splicer grabs you and turns you into a Big Daddy by way of some grisly conveyor.
Half Life II: The locals, starved for good food as the systems failed, joined a splicer cult that would, in exchange for good food and other privileges, ask you to allow more and more 'modifications' to yourself in exchange for these services.
Prey: You're just abducted and repurposed with some augmentation.
Doom 3: You, among a large crew of already-suited deep-sea divers, are in the wrong place at the wrong time when a portal to hell opens up, and you're all possessed (but for some reason, you cooperate with the Little Sisters).
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: This same contingent of deep-sea divers gets too close to a deterrent field made by other splicers, whichzombifies them with the added twist of an affinity for Little Sisters.
F.E.A.R.: The Little Sisters are something far more sinister, and conjure up the Big Daddies out of their psyche.
Note that "whichzombifies" is not a single word, but an attempt by me to get my post count up by issuing corrections separately in the absence of an edit button.
Tenenbaum is a SHE, not a he. Just FYI.

It pains me. I look on my buddy list on AIM. And there it is. His screen name. And I think, "That man knows their story. That man CREATED it. He knows it. But he can't tell me."
The great thing about speculation like this is that, right or wrong, its still fun to talk about I think you are reading a bit too much into the pic.
The big daddies werent built, FYI they were there BEFORE the civil war and ALREADY had a relationship with the LS, made a forum about this already...
