    How do you interrogate aliens?

How is information being extracted from aliens?

Edit: Made the question more open-ended.

You put a gun on their face and ask nicely to tell you everything?

Just kidding, of course! You need to capture the alien with the Arc Thrower (a kind of special tazer gun). At the end of the mission, you'll bring the alien back in the containment cell and then you choose to research the alien. That's it!

with a car battery, jumper cables, duct tape, and alien testicles

that should be all you need!

thank you for submitting your question to "How Do They Do That?!"

Funny. But I mean language wise.

A very nice man of large-ish build walks in, puts down the bag of cannolis, takes off his tailor suit and hat, rolls up his sleeves....

Well, inside the game fiction you mean. Really, it's much more of doing tests on the subject rather than asking him questions.

I intend on putting one in a chair, chaining it up and within arms reach on the table laying out a bowl of skittles.

If the alien gives me crucial and useful information against his companions, he will be awarded one skittle.

If he does not give me any viable information, then he is forced to only stare at the skittles, knowing they are just out of his grasp.

Serious reply: Typically interrogation is done by many means, and while in the OG I don't recall if it was specifically mentioned HOW, I am sure your imagination can whip out a few ideas and methods of how they did it. I tend to think it was done via mind probing methods.

As well, there is an Interrogation Briefing/Report once done which states what you have gained from that alien interrogation and everything.

    It's best not to inquire.

As far as language goes, they speak english, like all aliens do. Haven't you ever seen American "Science" Fiction?

They hold up action cards for the alien to choose from.

    :oints to card::

Did you see the scene from Casino Royale where Le Chiffre tortures Bond, imagine that but the humans carrying out the "tests" need a much larger bundle of rope.

I think you have to research alien containment and, thus, the ability to interrogate aliens.

So it's sort of like asking "How do we make plasma weapons, from a science perspective?" The scientists figure it out because they're scientists. For all we know, the aliens learned our language before invading so that they could know their enemy a little better.

    1. Teach them how to write in English or any other Earth language.
    2. Shove pen and paper in front of them and a cattle prod up their ass until they start writing.

True. And even if they don't speak it, everyone understands english if you speak it loudly and slowly enough.

That scene was awesome! It made my eyes water. If I was Bond I'd be thinking "Deathtrap! you're supposed to put me in a deathtrap you bastard!"

You sit them down in front of a TV and play Grey's Anatomy on replay.

No, it's a good point. In the original they kind of implied that the sectoids (and therefore the other races through them, or with the same devices) were able to communicate somehow with humans possibly telepathic, possibly the aliens would study the earth and then implant their emissaries with human languages. Besides, it's not too difficult to figure out a sign language of some sort that refers to the same types of concepts, and so on. So I don't think this would be the most difficult thing to... do once the aliens were broken down.

A much better question is: what did the xcom guys do with the live aliens after the interrogation research was over?

Well there was no resource management requiring feeding your troops, scientists or engineers... so I'm sure they got creative in the Kitchen.

That's not an interrogation... that's just torture.

Of a cruel and unusual variety.

That's pretty realistic actually.. The green sludge may give it away though.

Part of a good interrogation is to ensure the subject truly wishes to end it. Of course, if they're not fully conscious and they experience too much mental and physical strain, then they will say anything, and the interrogation will be useless.

So maybe Grey's Anatomy was a bit harsh.

no probs, I deserve it for the awkward wording. Anyone can fill in the blanks. I was just wondering if it was actually explained in the story how you communicate to get information if it's an actual interrogation and not just lab tests.

tie them to comforty chair, and do your Michael Jackson expression! Drop them into the blender with dough hook!
    or was that another game.

We've been blasting radio signals and what not out for decades and how do you think they found earth?
Likely through those very same signals, and it'd be a poor commander who didn't teach his troops some basics of the langauge and culture of where your invading, in the game over in the first one with the sectoid and the diplomat, no one questions whether or not the sectoid could speak to the human or how they knew what the document said.
Most likely since the aliens are organic/machine combinations they were programmed with the basics or our langauge... and our youtube habits..... the same way Neo learned martials arts in the Matrix

Simple, you have to insert a coin into the alien's back and before the first tear drops from the alien's eyes you have to make him the right question. If you wait too much the alien perishes.

Electric shocks, psychological terror, verbal feints, manipulation and most important - drugs.

Manipulation? What are you going to do say that you're torturing his friend and he's about to rat out on them and you'll stop the torture if he does it first? This thread's making we wish we did see it. It's got good hilarity potential.

Lesson learned. I just bought UFO Defense yesterday for the long wait 'til Thursday (EU).

You probably should've gotten it sooner. Make sure to pick up some tips about the basics to make it more fun. I think the original back in the days came with a manual, the steam version does not.....

They call it a "Alien Probe" for a reason. That or they put Rebecca Black's 'Friday' on repeat and wait for results.

There was a video which shows the first (sectoid) interrogation. It seems that xcom has a device to read their thoughts.
