Exclamation [Critical Crash] X-COM - Interceptor + Jets in air resolving at different times

Also sent to 2k support as ticket:
    Request #181835
[Critical Crash] X-COM - Interceptor + Jets in air resolving at different times = crash

In my opinion, this is an extremely simple test case, which really ticks me off since I'm a developer who's been a QA. This is not a corner case since events are randomized and it is certainly likely that many players will run into the option to intercept a UFO while their battle team is en route to a combat scenario.

Since I play with a general expectation that my savegames wouldn't be locked into crashing (not an unfair assumption), I did not have multiple savegames, just quicksave, so my game is screwed. And unfortunately, I rather like my crew of veterans in classic mode: http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/...76E0EC9912928/

    -Fully Reproducable-
    Set up the following situation:
    1. A group of soldiers is EN ROUTE to a battle map.
    2. UFO Sighting - respond by sending an interceptor. The ground battle must START before the interceptor begins it's fight, for my particular case. Who knows, it might fail both ways.
    3. Complete the battle map mission.
    4. The game will return to globe, and freeze.

Had the same thing happen a little later in the game. Except my interceptor shot down the ufo, I responded to it with the skyranger. I completed the mission and my skyranger heads back to base while my interceptor takes a detour to the north pole??? Can't do anything after that just zooms in on the geoscape with no options.

bump, because this wasn't resolved in the latest patch. This is a game-breaking bug and is bound to affect all regular players sooner or later, since it's definitely possible to have random UFO events DURING missions - and people WILL intercept those UFOs. Or it will be possible to have council missions, etc, happening during UFO events. Take your pick of poison.

I'm having the very same problem.

I also set two jets after a ufo...

After completing a mission, the Skyranger is flying back to back, then the globe zooms in and freezes, with no options, buttons or any way of doing anything but closing with ALT-TAB.

    This is frustrating...

Ihad this problem too. Send a aircraft, and soon after, sent another. The 1st shot dow the UFo, sent Skyranger, did the mission and when it ended, the 2nd aircraft went to the north pole, and them the disply showed a airsfip battle, except it did not show the battle, just froze.

I submitted a ticket yesterday morning and it still hasn't even been assigned to a help desk operator.

I'm getting close to asking for a chargeback from my CC company. Can we at least get someone in the community to acknowledge that this is an issue?

their reply to me was to ask for system specs. I'm replying back that systems specs are irrelevant.

Exactly. Just an acknowledgment here would go a long way. Anyone get any kind of response for this issue?

Just had this happen as well. Any way around it?

ie: go back before both actions and click not now to the intercept or something?

Yay! Just finished my hardest mission ever with actually all my men surviving and was greeted by this lovely globe showing me continent of africa. Fun fun fun!

Aaand I'm off playing this crap. Civilization 5 was pretty playable after a year and it came out of the same studio. Maybe we're as "lucky" with this one.

STOP RELEASING BROKEN GAMES! (I'll not stop buying them.)

Just had my Classic / Ironman game destroyed by this bug. UFO sighting popped while Skyranger was on it's way to a mission so sent an Interceptor after it. After the mission the game zooms up to the globe and reacts to nothing after. This bug must be fixed NOW.

Here's my savefile. Just put all 3 guys to overwatch and they'll kill the last alien for you conveniently.

Haven't had this happen yet but good to know how to avoid it - but it better be something they fix sooner rather than later. Furthermore yes, an official acknowledgement would go a long way of getting the community to realize it is being worked on.

Just so you know, I'm looking at this now. Unfortunately, I loaded your save (Bomb Mission Quicksave), beat the mission, and once I returned to the geoscape, the interception occurred as expected, with no hang or problems. That could mean a timing issue, though that's only a guess at this early point. I will continue to investigate, and I'm truly sorry that you've encountered this problem.

Many people have experienced this (including me). I'm never ever sending an Interceptor while my Skyranger is in the skies. It's even easier to reproduce if you send two Interceptors at a single UFO. I take this as 99% confirmed, so just avoid the situation. Either return the troops and wait for the Interceptor to finish or vice versa. I don't think that ground missions are that time-sensitive anyway.

This just happend to me to. Send the Skyranger on a terror mission and just as it left the base I get a UFO warning so I send a interceptor but my terror mission started first. I finish it and when my Skyranger starts going home I get stuck at the globe view.

    Edit:

hehe, there was an easy fix. Send the skyranger back to base. Then do the interceptor mini game, and then send the skyranger back to the terror mission.

But this only works if your not in Iron man mode and can load the game back.

This gamer sums it up well. I have experience both iterations of the glitch, as well as a few other annoying ones.

One that I hate is when steam decides to update the game while your playing it and just closes the game mid mission, that one was a kicker. (by kicker i mean I wanted to kick the person responsible for it)

Or how its a pain in the butt to move efficiently the second level of some downed ships because it keeps rendering the roof so you can not see. Which is particularly bad because in the art book the game came with they seemed so proud of their camera views.

How about the temple ship mission? that one is fun isn't it? I tried it twice and both times it glitched out and I couldn't finish it. The first time I waited for the enemy movement to resolve, after 32 minutes I said "**** it" the second time it just froze. Man this game is hard. can't even finish some levels, literally, you cant finish them because the glitches wont let you.

There are a few other game crashing glitches I have experienced but they were pre-patch, and a few other camera angle related movement problems due to grid recognition with multi-level tiles.

If, and it is a big if, you can play through all these glitches it is a good game and its the closest xcom game that even comes close to the original. There is a big potential here but as is the case for games in this generation they release a sub par product at full price, are probably going to take a few months to fix these issues but not before they charge us, the gamers, more money to add a little bit more content and say that it will help with these problems. But hopefully firaxis and 2k are different on that latter aspect.

Similar thing, this is what happened to me:
I have one that did not appear on the list. I am playing PC version IronMan Easy (first game), it does have the Oct 11 patch installed (through Steam). I sent two interceptors after the first UFO I detected and the first shot it down before the second one got there. I launched a SkyRanger, landed, killed, and headed home. The first interceptor had already gotten to the base. The second interceptor appeared to hang out over where the ship had crashed. When the sky ranger got back to base, the screen enlarged so the world took up the whole screen and then would no longer respond other than to spin fast for scanning or slow when I toggled the scanning button. Events would roll by, like pending research, construction, and Council Reports, yet nothing would get it out of this mode.

From reading the other posts it looks like I am hosed. Oh well, first UFO is really early in the game to learn this lesson. Not too much time wasted.

<ninja edit> This did remind me of the old don't save XCOM the original while an interceptor mission window was minimized. That always crashed too. May it was a callback by the designers

Jake - I have this problem and I can send you my save file if you want. Saved on the last turn before killing the last alien in a downed ship in Russia. Once that one dies, the mission is over, Skyranger stutters a bit on screen, then I see geoscape with menu overlayed on top for about a second, and then geoscape becomes just the globe centered on Africa, with no menu, no options, no nothing, all I can do is press Alt-F4 to quit the game.

This is reproducible on >>every attempt<< from this save game.

Same here. Gamebreaker playing Ironman on Normal. Can't do anything about it either since Ironman. Despite the glitches I'm loving the game. However I'm on Ironman game 8 due to 5 glitched out games

  26. #26
Sent two interceptors for one "very-large" UFO. First one managed to take down the boogie before second had to engage, so I've sent the Skyranger... just to find myself stuck on geoscape after its return from the mission with second interceptor floating in the middle of the north american continent ...

I've noticed that the chances of this happening have decreased post patch. However, since they haven't actually handled the case ... it's not fixed. Also, users know to avoid it. But that doesn't make it fixed.

I got exactly the same issue. Luckily i'm on an easy play trough without iron man Option. But i hate it to lose this save. i got so many luck that i capture an berserker, heavy floater and muton. I hope They fix this asap so i Don't run in it again. And Form Now to eternity i will ever send only one ship at once . :-)

I have the same problem... I sent 2 interceptors after a ufo, shot it down, sent the ground crew in, captured the ship, and suddenly the 2nd interceptor that I sent takes a detour to the north pole and all I see is big planet earth and there is nothing else I can do... game freezes...

I find it funny that no one mentioned how the original game also had an Interceptor crash bug (clicky for details). So, in a way, you could call this one a tribute to the original ...

friggin customer service. Do people even think to _not_ send out the silly scripted mails? I think I got through to somebody - considering the English in the most recent reply is so much worse than the scripted mails.

    Email thread attached

    Brian K, Oct 15 18:26 (PDT):
    Hello The Soon Is,

Thank you for sending us the information on the glitch you have found we will foward this information to our admins and will be working an a way to fix this issue.

    Dan M, Oct 13 15:46 (PDT):
    Hello,

Thank you for sending us your DxDiag and MSinfo.

We would like to have you try the following troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issues you are experiencing.

    - Ensure that you have Administrator privileges on the computer you are trying to run the game on.

    - Update your video and sound drivers (refer to manufacturer’s website)

    - Disable Background Applications
It is strongly recommended to turn off all background applications when running graphically intensive programs. Many applications can cause errors such as GPFs, color scrambling, loss of sound effects or music, etc. Taking a minute to turn off these applications can save you the trouble of rebooting later. Background applications include such things as System Agent, Norton Utilities, Internet chat utilities, virus checkers and screen savers. Crash guard programs such as First Aid for Windows can also cause problems.

    Windows XP
    1. Click Start, then Run
    2. In the Open: box, type msconfig. Click OK
    3. On the General Tab, click the Selective Startup option.
    4. Uncheck the option to Load Startup Items.
    5. Click Apply and Close.
    6. Answer Yes to Restart Windows.

    Windows Vista / Windows 7
    1. Click on the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
    2. Click on Start Search
    3. Type in msconfig and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
    4. Click the Continue button if the message "Windows needs your permission to continue"
appears. If this message does not appear, please continue to step 5.
    5. On the General Tab, choose Selective Startup.
    6. Uncheck the option to Load startup items.
    7. Click Apply, then Ok, and restart the system when prompted.

    - Reinstall Direct X Updates
It is possible that the version of Direct X running on your computer is encountering errors with the game you are trying to play. If this is the case, we advise reinstalling Direct X. The latest version of Direct X can be found here http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35

    - Disable SLI/CrossFireX
Many games do not support either the SLI or CrossFireX features of Nvidia or ATI video cards. It is advised to disable SLI/CrossFireX if you are running two or more video cards in the same computer when encountering issues. Please refer to manufacturer’s website for more details on how to enable/disable this feature.

    - Lower Sound Acceleration

    Windows XP
    1. Login to the machine as the Administrator user.
    2. Go to Start, then Control Panel.
    3. Double-click the Sound and Audio Devices icon.
    4. Click the Audio tab.
    5. In the Sound Playback section, click the Advanced button.
    6. Click the Performance tab.
    7. Move the slider for Hardware Acceleration back 2 notches to the left to the Basic setting.

    Windows Vista/7
    1. Choose Start > Control Panel.
    2. Double click Personalization and select Display Settings.
    3. Click Advanced Settings.
    4. Click Change Settings on the Troubleshooting tab.
    5. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None.
    6. Click Apply and then click OK to accept the new setting and close the dialog box.
    7. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box.
    8. Restart Windows.

    - Verifying the integrity of the game cache (only applicable if you have the Steam version of the game)
    1. Right click on the game in the Steam library and select Properties
    2. Navigate to the "Local Files" tab
    3. Click "Verify integrity of game cache"

    - Uninstall and Reinstall the game completely.
There is a possibility that some of the files which are installed during the setup process are incomplete or corrupted. Try uninstalling the game completely and reinstalling it under its default or express settings.

If none of the above troubleshooting resolves the issue, please contact us back for further troubleshooting.

    Best Regards,

    Brian
The Soon Is, Oct 13 15:33 (PDT):

As a developer and a QA, I'm disappointed that you're following the script.
This is a logic error, unrelated to the system specifications. Such
    information is irrelevant.

    Please refer to:
    http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread...ifferent-times
    http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread...nto-north-pole

Have your programmers look at the code managing events on the geoscape.
Either the events aren't being cleaned up properly, or stuff is being
dropped off the queue by accident.
    Dan M, Oct 13 12:38 (PDT):
    Hello The,

We're sorry that you're experiencing this issue and would be more than happy to assist. Before we can begin the troubleshooting process we will need some more information about your computer.

For this information we will need to see your DXDiag and MSinfo files.

    To get these files:

    1) Press the Windows key +'R' on your keyboard > Type dxdiag > Click OK > Click Save all information

    2) Press the Windows key +'R' on your keyboard > Type msinfo32 > Click OK > Select File and then EXPORT and save the file as a text file(*.txt)

Log in to your support ticket and then select the "attach file" option under the comments box to attach the files to your case. Alternatively respond to this email with the files attached.

Once we receive this information we will research your issue and respond back.

    Kind regards,
The Soon Is, Oct 10 21:02 (PDT):
    Additional Comment:

The battle must START before the interceptor begins it's fight, for my particular case. Who knows, it might fail both ways.

    -Fully Reproducable-
    Set up the following situation:
    1. A group of soldiers is EN ROUTE to a battle map.
    2. UFO Sighting - respond by sending an interceptor
    3. Complete the battle map mission
    4. The game will return to globe, and freeze.

In case your QA team is too incompetent to recreate the bug, I have attached is a savegame with the battle map being a council mission. It is ☺☺☺☺ easy to finish.

New poster, old time player. This boys and girls is why you dont buy into the new game hype. Stay 3-6 months behind the curve and all gamebreakers like this are fixed by the time you get to the game.

Otherwise its like watching something like the matrix movie and having it crash in the middle, oh wait, thats sort of what happened, bad example.

Chalk it up to the aliens messing with your GUI to the alternative world where the X-com base is that you are controlling remotely. They severed your connection to throw you off your game! Damn pesky aliens, infecting our internets!

But on a serious side from someone who started on a commodore 64. Get your head out of your ass 2k. 50-80 people developement team and you miss a bug that happens every single time when you have 2 interceptors in the air with a skyranger. How amateur are you, on a scale of banana to incompetent?

Asking paying customers "whats your specs".

Enjoy watching your stock values http://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/ttwo go down until gamebreaker bugs like these are fixed.

Have fun2k. To the players, i recomend instead of ☺☺☺☺☺ing, you put undervalued buy options on current stocks to drive down prices. Otherwise you're only going to get the preverbial dong up your pooper from people like this that dont even beta their own games and then have the balls to blame their customers.

Other than that. Great game btw. Just... dont fail with bugs like this designers... just... dont.

Damn this has happened to me what I did:

    1) Launched 2 interceptors at UFO
    2) Knocked it down
    3) Sent Skyranger
    4) did mission
    5) upon completion geoscape freezes.

Its an awful shame been playing a long time on that classic ironman and now its toast!
