XCOM: Enemy Unknown patch notes for 10/11/12

    Hi all,

We wanted to let you know the details for the PC update for XCOM: Enemy Unknown that went live today (10/11/12). I've included the notes on this patch below:

    • Various visibility/hiding optimizations
    • Multiplayer text chat support (press J to activate)
    • Mouse button 4/5 will switch soldiers in the Barracks
    • ESC hides the movement grid, if you do not want to commit to a move while it is activated
    • Squad Sight ability optimization
    • Fixed issue when equipping two grenades with Deep Pockets.
    • Fixed Rapid Fire sometimes consuming too much ammo.
    • SHIVs that are damaged will no longer become unusable.
    • Fixed some hangs/soft crashes in tactical combat.
    • Replaced software cursor with the operating system cursor to reduce lag and framerate dependence.
    • Fixed rendering bug which causes some soldier’s hair to appear as if it is rendering on top of environment fog.
    • 1080p movies are now used at all times on the PC.

    Exactly!

    But great news nevertheless...

    Thanks devs

The real question is, where is Greg?
    I hope it's not permadeath.

Guess that's where the 2 GBs came from?

It's a start. I hope you guys can be equally speedy about addressing the interface and inventory system.

They were part of initial 10GB but they were just not triggered properly (or at all, better to say)...

But yes, they might have needed to re-upload them!?!?

Change erroneous "Ammo = Ammo - 3" to "Ammo = Ammo - 2" on one line and then you have to recompile Relevant_Tactical_System.DLL and send out the new version (all 200Kbytes of it) that essentially changes one byte. Stuff like that adds up. One could split stuff up into more, smaller DLLs, but that causes a complexity and performance hit on the other end. The size of various library files is sometimes tough balancing act between intentional swapping of smaller files to fit the projected RAM limitations, and piling all your eggs into fewer, larger files and increasing the chance of a murderous performance hit from VRAM swapping on a lower RAM system. Inconvenient file sizes during the patching process usually doesn't even come into consideration. Yet another of the many aspects of the development process few people think of.

Textures.tfc and Lighting.tfc were changed, that's 1.6 gigs right there.

Only explanation I can think of, but I thought people said the hi-def movies were already there - just not used?

Going to check this out. I wasn't a big fan of how laggy the mouse cursor seemed to be.

    Yap - that's what I've heard...

Strange thing is that some people in other thread are reporting other bugs being fixed by the patch.

Such as Ant Farm zoom - yet no mention of it in OP!?!?!

My feeling is that there indeed could be few more things there than what's listed above...

    We will see

Did this also fix the issue with freshly built SHIVs not being useable and SHIVs on missions that are unable to fire or use any other skills?

Optimization usually means "making the code chug less". So, squad site was burdening the processor, and now it does so less. As an educated guess, anyway.

Do any of those sound like the solve the "2 aircraft" problem?

They probably find out the movie file names should be "1080P*" instead of "1080p*" so now we all have to re-download them with the correct name...

Any news on when the 360 should get this patch?

There can only be one solution: Steam needs a system to dedupe everything.

I hope so, but I doubt it. The game is a mess as it is now and not a lot got adressed by this patch. (and the patch will probably introduce new problems as they normally do.....)

    Thanks for the patch notes!

THe only bug I've seen so far has been my sniper sometimes can't lock in on a target even though the alien head icon is showing in the top left.

I have to manually switch their weapon to the pistol and then back and it fixes it.

    Why is the patch 1.8GB?

This seems like a waste of my hard drive space....

Plus not to mention it will take me 2 hours to fricken download it...

re the patch size... it doesn't have to be the vids that make it that large... it'll depend on how the files are spliced up to distribute too. If they change one line of code in a file that is X Mb big you'll end up downloading the whole file again...

edit: it might be 2Gb of downloaded files... doesn't mean it's current install PLUS 2 Gb... could just be 2Gb of updated files and no extra space taken up...

I have that same duty on the 29th of this month. Good job on the quick patching David, however...it appears that in the Bug- list thread there are still many issues you guys need to work on getting resolved

The ant farm zoom now works. Although it's different than the demo, better in my opinion. And the button problem I posted about is fixed.

Game's out for a mere two days, and we already get a nice patch. Sure it might not fix everything, but I, at least, am heartened and encouraged by the simple fact that Firaxis is clearly still working hard to make this game the best it can be. Thanks devs!

The UI seems even worse now, especially when height difference in involved. Selecting the tile to move to is a pain and I'm constantly being blocked by UFO roofs.

Some people are never happy. It's been 3 days after the initial launch. Or rather, hasn't been. That they where able to come out with a patch so soon to address anything is frankly pretty damned good, and speaks volumes for their commitment.

These type of things are normal on a launch. Just feel lucky you are able to play and not getting a "We're sorry, but our servers won't let you play your single player game." like everyone was getting on the launch of Diablo III.

Keep up the good work, and awesome game guys.

apparently 1.6GB of it is two texture & lighting files. So a change to any one of the textures in those files means the whole thing gets redownloaded. 2GB is a pain for those of us on metered connections, but I'd rather have it patched
