Had the same problem. There was a hidden XCOM process running in the background, which I killed in Task Manager. I went to the Steam Library, forced Steam to "Validate local files" (or something similar). It had to update a file. After it finished, XCOM started, saying "Finalizing installation...". Then it run properly.

Haven't had a problem with Windows 8. Been running XCom on the release preview. Try setting the exe to run in compatibility mode for Windows 7. I had to do that for Guild Wars 2 to work and it was fine.

@Bobbydylan - Windows 8 is actually quite good, it's faster than Windows 7 by quite a bit, especially boot times. On all the games I've played so far I've managed to achieve a higher frame rate than what I was experiencing on Windows 7. The new interface took some time to get used to (couple of weeks) but I've grown used to it and there are some benefits.

The game is buggy enough, why would you risk having more problems with it by getting Windows 8? lol

Windows 8 is still a cheaper disappointment than XCOM EU.

LOL .. Agree * 1000%. I am going to just ignore the fact that it was even released as it is irrelevant (I hope) as much as Windows Millenium edition (LOL, what a joke that was)

Bad Win OS: Win 2008 ME -> Win Vista -> Win 8
"Good" Win OS: Win XP -> Win 7 -> Wait for next OS after Win 8
