I was about to own, no really!
My latest tale of multiplayer glory (or lack there of).
Okay, I'm the Japanese again and the Aztecs are camping 4 or 5 legion armies outside Kyoto (which fortunately had 2 archer armies, one with loyalty, a general, and a wall thanks to masonry). I was pushing tech fast and discovered navigation, giving me some naval support to help in my defense. Soon I had a fleet, and a few knight armies to boot, and I moved up my fleet into attack position. Before I could attack the Aztec forces decided to retreat, and after years of war, I was able to garner peace.
Unfortunately this allowed the Aztecs to wipe out the other two computer civs (Americans and Germans) and gain in power quickly. They were progressing towards victory in each category by a substantial lead, even passing me in tech, but I had a plan. I was creating a large amount of knight armies and rushing my tech towards combustion, with a great builder waiting to rush Leonardo's workshop. One turn from the completion of my plan, I decided to include the last human civ, the Russians in my attack, seeing as we were both pretty much screwed if we let the Aztecs continue the way they were.
To make a long story short (I know, too late), I tried to open up private chat with the Russians, (who apparently didn't have a mic) and the game promptly gave me a "tech victory" message (even though I was a couple techs behind and no one quit). Unfortunately, my ranking didn't go up any, I didn't get credit for a win, and my savory butt kicking that I was about to deal out to the Aztecs was stolen from my grasp.
Just another chapter in the ongoing saga of multiplayer mysteries...

I like people that write like this. Good post.
wow dissapointing ending.. I was waiting 4 the all out annihilation war story :P
It is most annoying when that happens, perhaps more so that it is almost as common as not.
how many cities did you have ?
Five, my capital at the tip of a penninsula, and four more on a large island just a galleys trip away. I don't think anyone knew about the island, I think they figured I just had my capital so I could crank out armies from my island in relative security.
