What year does Bioshock take place during?

Now that I think about it, has anyone from 2K announced the exact year that the game is suppose to take place in? Okay, we all know that Rapture was created at some point after World War II, but does anyone know the year that the game takes place in?

Sometime in the 60s I believe. That's all we know so far. There was screenshot with a "Happy new year 1959(?)" banner, so assuming things went wrong that year (since the banner was never taken down), the player arriving in the mid 60s would be enough time for Rapture to fully collapse into a nightmare, but soon enough where everyone's not dead.

I think I heard somewhere that Rapture was built during 1946. The time you come down to Rapture takes place 10 years after the Rapture civil war so I think thats early 60's??? (can't confirm this)

    Acch, I'm getting a headache.

So now as I understand the timeline, Rapture was completely built by 1946, the civil war started sometime in 1959, and the player arrives some year in the early 60's. Quite an African-style republic story if you ask me.

It's an 'everybody for themselves' society...

Perhaps more important is there does not appear to be any external threats. Most society's break down, become corrupt or decadent, or just plain stagnate without a threat to keep them alert and strong.

yeah... i guess. it's strange, because the people there wouldn't let it hang around a few years later. i guess we have to wait for an official answer...

Now I'm imaging mutated Steinbeck characters populating Rapture...

I am playing Bioshock Infinite and I will not spoil anything but thanks for the yearly time frame. Actually have Gamefly and they let you play a lot of PC games for free and I am downloading Bioshock now because that is such a great game. Thanks for the answers.
