And here's the weird part: in my very next game this morning I got the exact same map! AIs were differently located, as were artifacts. I didn't amass as many huts and barbs, but this game was almost as good with two cities having two dye each. That rarely, rarely happens to me in the early game with England. And I again found the SoC for two GSs, so I used them on Currency and Religion as I had already researched Feud. Another easy game, this time against India.
I played him last night. My spain vs his Egyptians(oracle).

Long story short I stay in ancient for awhile expanding from three caps and 100g city. Build a barracks camp the AoC. He gets to tepublic and plops a city down near delhi and I conbect madrid to delhi via road and take his city after backfilling into industrial take his city (netting invention) and pop the ark.
I harass sone of his cities taking two or three more before he GS combustion. I already used a gs on indy and was banking hammers but stopped after gsing corp and taking another city getting combustion. He ends up with three of my under defended cities near him with a blitz tank army which he loses to a TA of my own. And quits after that.
He had a gs ga gl and gh settled in his cap and he was settled like four squares from athens. Yet never attacked them...weird.
He did not demo glitch as he respected it after each time he switched back the turn after anarchy so he could attack.
Well, at least he doesn't always resort to questionable practices. In my case I had so many early huts and villages that I was doing quite a bit each turn and he was probably just frustrated.

Seems to me that if you get an early AI cap the vet WA can defend it pretty well against a HA, and then you're not too far from IW if you choose BW instead of HBR. Duke's recent China games reinforced this idea for me as he never once used a horse in his 10 games against the Beast.
In my game after that it was my France versus an Aztec player. It was close and I was sending cats on galleons his way when I learned I couldn't get out of Demo (found the AW earlier). Has this ever happened to anyone???? It was frustrating and I quit since I couldn't attack him.
That's no excuse for him to freeze the game. I frequently have lots of units to move around every turn and usually they're spread out around the map. Sometimes it seems like it can take forever for the cursor to move to next unit to move. What i really hate is when i'm finished moving a unit the cursor moves around the world to go to next unit even though i have another unit to move just a few tiles away from unit just moved. Then you also have those stupid, useless, random barb pop-ups whenever the cursor moves near a barb that further slows everything down. So irritating.

Had a very very long game yesterday against a Zulu player. I was Spain. Slow start, little gold, settled Madrid in a horrible spot just to get London and Monarchy at 2900BC. So not too bad, but w/o gold and Madrid not useful for expansion, even Nav/Monarchy combo is tough to leverage. He got GW in 3100BC and took the other two AI caps. So I get my 100g settler and one from London, put them on a galleon and settle one a decent whale island, the other one on a 1 tile double dye island. Nice - gold production secured for faster expansion. Opponent finds SoC and flips the double dye city - what a setback. I slowly expand more, settle a whale double-dye island and he flips that one too - wah!!! Can it get any worse? So I continue expansion to some decent spots and he races away in tech. My first GP is a GA and I flip the whale double-dye city back - at least something!
Long story short. It went all the way to me having to get MI and Flight to fight off his bombers (oxford) and tank armies. He made some strange choices along the way: He teched to tanks, skipping metallurgy and ignored the money techs, which save my butt in the end. Game would have been over quicker if his riflemen army in Washington would not have won 5 close-odds battles in a row, making it defend at 90 in the end !!! I also built Leo's to upgrade my knights to tanks and defenses to MI. Was a long-drawn out game, that would have been over much quicker if it had not been for those 2 GA flips and that mighty stubborn riflemen army.
I cannot recall the last time I built Leo's or teched to tanks or even flight. Was fun, but the game was soooo slow. But this game shows again the power of the money techs. I was able to rush way more units than him. He also made the mistake of armying up his bombers instead of attacking individually.
I noticed that there are a lot of people out there (especially Zulu player) that are only comfortable attacking with tanks. They take caps with their impis, have a big advantage and then do nothing, waiting for tanks.
I think legions are totally powerful but I dont think you can use evidence of china v zulu as a good example. Zulu isnt coming with horses so its easier to fend off impi armies no problem and you also dont need to make huge gold with china you just need to carve out your little peice of the map so you can survive with a few cities till you have the late game advantage.

I've done it someties when I was roman and see that my legion rush wouldn't work. Retreat then Leo's for knight.

got in a fun one last night, my japan vs china. i take paris in 3300 with a WA. i exhaust the gold on my peninsula and head out to the main body. on the way i meet china, who promptly kills my archer with a HA. my WA is trailing by a few spaces and will need luck to beat the HA if attacked, so i sell it. it gets me 100 g and i settle on a fish spot with my 3rd city. its going to take him about 4 turns to get to me and i manage a barracks and LA before he arrives. he really blew it here as he had spain and egypt that were closer to him. i work all gold for an extended period and he goes to republic while pulling way ahead in tech. i settle 2 fish islands (1 double) as i swing my galley around to attack mode. he destroys my barracks which slows down my scheming. he settles a city with cattle and all water tiles, then rushes a library. i land 2 LA's and an AA an defeat 2 single archers. he has used a gs on feud a couple turns prior, so i leave my forces on a hill 2 spaces from the city. he can't attack the city without coming into range. sure enough he shows up with a galleon fleet and KA, but my AA is entrenched and i win a drawn out chess match. i get a gb so i beeline nav and rush eitc. i switch to dem i i go from down 14-3 to even at 16 before he knows what hit him. he really blew it by focusing on retaking his city. he could have used his knights to take my islands much easier. he eventually comes at kyoto with cats but i counter him before he can break thru and he gives in. i was about to come at him with a cruiser fleet anyways, along with a gg and inf cats (busy taking madrid), so he was done for anyways.
Attacked Aztec single archer from a hill with my first HA of the game—and lost. Is there anything more soul-crushing in civ rev?
Got some more games in.
America vs Americs - I find 7CoG in 3200, take 2 AI and have 3 HA at his cap a few turns later. He went for LA instead of AA, so i take his cap, he takes it back and i take it again the same turn. His 1tile island has only 1 archer in it. Win
My Spain vs America. He has a flying start, takes 1 AI cap + 7CoG. I get an AA up before he reaches me, so he focusses on the 2 other AI wich are both close.
I manage to steal an AI Caravan, get my 100 gold and push out my own HA, at this point hes harassing france and russia so i guessed it would be mostly over. I declared war on them both and start looking for one of his caps. Like its always with rushers there caps are not defended I walk in on Thebes (first AI he took) and Washington is only 2 tiles further with a hill next to it. He tries to pull something up as defence, but my vet HA from a hill is to much, he does take russia finally just before i nip his cap.
He comes back with an infiltration HA and gets a lucky win against my AA, so i got a Infil HA next to his cap with a GG. I decide to give it another shot before giving up on his cap and the last AA defeats his HA, he quits
Last one, my spain vs Egypte.
Get abit unlucky with barbs at the start, 3-4 x 2 wounded so getting a very slow start. Got an early galleon out but he finds most of the artifacts. He takes out england and gets Monarch.
At this point he has 3 cities and i got 1, not close to my 100 gold at all. He also has 2 warriors camping my forests.
I got an AA in my cap but have to try 4 times! to win 4.5-4 to get rid of his last warrior. And finally my Galleon finds something useful, KT. I go around the back (he had me boxed on a decent sized pen) and am able to take out the zulu, who have 2 cities by then with the KT
Anyway the rest is easy, he gets CoL before me but never has more then 4 cities, i mass expand to 25+ cities (is abit hard with him pressing the timer the sec it starts)
There was no whale anywhere(maybe 3-4 spots on the whole map) but there was dye everywhere, i must have gotten 4-5 2-dye spots. Once i get monarchy and rush some libraries, i rush beside him in tech like hes not there. 1 turn before i supposed to get my world bank up i flip his biggest city, and he quits hehe. He had so much advantage, (acces to all AI, collosus, found every artifact) but he preferred turling in his 4 cities.
Got a 40-30 record now i think where 20 of the 30 were freezes wich is mehh. I am getting abit tired of some of the weird stuff in civ rev. When i was playing a good aztec player with japan i got 3 horses ready to form an army and he resynced, now before i get to move he comes with a HA and overruns all 3. Thats not right. Also had multiple barbs glitching, where i attacked the last flag, and then opponent gets the loot. Sometimes its vital these things in the beginning.
yeah Im always really impressed when i see a zulu player making good use of overrun with catapult armies and using elite legions. Mawpawk thumped me with elite legions in i think our first zulu vs zulu matchup - i didnt know what hit me. and lawful_rock gave me a hiding with cats - can't remember what civ i was using but it was a shock coming from zulu Ya just dont see any of that on the PS3 side at all - as rare as it may be on xbox side...

I start off on a 6tile island with no barbs, i thought about just giving this one up but i was still fresh , so i get a warrior+galley, and get 1 name tile on my huge island. From there on luck is on my side, i find KT 1 step with my galley and the sec i meet a chinese horsemen next to a hut, so i park my warrior next to the hut while he takes it. My KT kills his horsemen from the boat and he quits, wow, that couldnt have gone easier.
My mongols vs greeks. Short story, i take the whole map and all 3 AI by 1500bc, got him cornered on a 6 tile peni, i got like 25 cities while barely settling any, and he managed to do 1 more thing, he grabs one of my cities with KT, next turn my patrolling HA takes it back and he quits. Man, sometimes mongols are so good.
India vs America. Having more HA then an american player by 2500bc is bad american player, i quickly roll him up for the win.
Another India vs egypte. I start on a paradise island for india, atleast 3-4 spots with 2-3 resources there. Egypte takes out america quick, and my 2 HA take the other 2 AI. He wasnt a bad player, but he never expanded after the initial 3 cities. After i expanded and turned on the beaker engine, i went past him at lightning speed. It was a nice game to start but when i saw he had just 3 cities i was dissapointed. Oxford bombers ended it quick.
Spain vs zulu, he found me in 5 turns, with some lag he capped me at 3200, not much i could do. Hate to lose to something like this, but its part of the game.
Egypte vs americs. He settles right next to me, and takes my barb, i kill his warrior, he gets a WA and kills mine, my other warrior finds 100g, and i finished HBR before he reached me. He find KT and i never see his WA anymore, he just has the KT and a warrior next to his empty cap. I am 2 spots away, next turn i move around his KT and cap him.
He messaged me saying the barb talked to him so he couldnt do anything to stop. We all have this once in a while
We do a rematch my germans vs his japan but i DC and cba to get back on.
interesting readings raven cheers, 25 cities is a hell of a lot! as for the weird stuff yes thats part in parcel of this game where evry1 has the ability to glitch a barb and steal yor reward or a resync will take a tech(lets say nav) and leave yor whole attack force on the bottom of the ocean but at the end of the day this game is just positively addictive ...so we proceed

Good thing it barely happens. But its funny to see it, i even had gotten a GG and he was running on the mainland out of sync of my HA who was on a boat, even making name tiles hahaha

Ah the great general. You get awarded him for getting lucky!! ;-) Mine never stays with the army. I think his horse is lame or gets a puncture later on...
Got in a few quick, but fun games...
Played my India v. Egypt. His settler walks right next to my warrior. He settles and I almost get the walkin before he rushes a warrior. (does anyone know if you can declare war before your opponent has settled? Might have saved me a second.) Should have been more patient... formed WA, attacked, lost, he gets the walkin.
Rematch, my Spain v. his aztecs. Found 7cog on the mainland, 3600ish (2nd time that's happened to me). My HA finds his warrior, and takes out his cap, one turn later.
Played xWise in chat—man, he is good (is he a forum member?). Made the mistake of telling him I only had 30 minutes, so he goes Chinese and BRINGS THE HOUSE. I had a decent start with India, taking out Madrid (no nav), but he quickly brings 3 HAs (vs. my 2 HAs), and caps me.
I dont think so - but he does seem to hang out in the chat room a lot, good to see one of the regulars getting some kudos

My mongols vs egypte
I start off south and instantly get blocked by a barb. Back at my position and 1 turn lost i find 2 barbs, they both werent to bad but not great either.
Im on a tiny peninsula and at the end is, yes, egypte with colusses.
We got some warrior fights going on but eventually he wins with a WA, he takes 1 barb city, and i retake it the same turn with a HA.
From there on its simple, he makes 1 other city the whole game, and i expand to about 12 cities. Very late in the game i catch up and take his 2 cities with knights.
Pfff what a quality player.
Another one my germans vs Greek
i start off at a peninsula again, with greece not to far away. I aint got much ground but worse no forests around. I find a galley put my WA across and kill 4 barbs on the other side where china is. These barbs give me like 5 caravans, crazy!
Anyway i expand to about 5 cities and with all this gold i MUST use the warrior trick.
I have 2 production cities and 2 cities for gold, in the meanwhile i see the greek heavily teching and expanding on the island around me.
At around 12-2 tech loss i think its enough, and make 7 WA into LA, and attack 1 pretty city on an island, he manages to pull a Hoplite army in there and a galleon for def, so i quickly offload my shipment (7 LA and an AA) and sell my galley. I run over his Hoplite army and get Nav, awesome.
Because he pressed end turn straight away, i did lose 2 armies because it just went to quick, oh well.
I take the armies to the sec city near me on an island with a newbuild Galleon and take that one aswell pretty easily, without any losses this time.
In the meanwhile he takes out the french for a decent sized paris, and GBed EiC there. In the meantime he went up to about 18-5 in tech, also messaging me how his militia supposedly won a battle on the sec island city i took against a elite LA. But it glitched. When i get these messages i know im winning
I take my 5 LA and hammer out a Galleon fleet to Paris.I also proceed to make them fundy. On the way i see 2 Galleon of his standing on 1 tile, so i kill them both while the third one just came in, so i kill that one too haha. Put my armies next to paris and attack. Well here i get some bad luck, lose some 7-10 difference battles (again he put the timer on right away, really annoying.) Anyway i lose 2 more LA and am not able to take the city.
Luckily in the meanwhile i been teching to knights, so i retreat my 3 remaining LA, and tech knights. I bring 1 more KA with me as back up, as i made it back to paris in 2 turns, but this time with 4x fundy KA. I easily take the city.
I see his cruiser coming in and hes offloading like 2 KA and a hop army. i lose 1 KA but managed to kill the rest incl the cruiser 9-9 against my Galleon fleet.
I sail around towards 16 pop Athens, i offload my 3 KA next to it with a gazillion militia. He rushes a sec cruiser next to athens, next turn i beat him to it and attack both 9-9 and win both, finally some luck on my side
I take Athens the next turn and he quits.
Both not very interesting games, but especially the last one shows how some players dont even suspect danger aslong as they got the tech lead. Even Athens only had 1 Hop army in it with 1 single knight. While he saw me 40 turns before with the 7 LA. Its like the think their tech lead will protect them.
The bad playing part on both comes from the fact that early on i suspect the people im playing are not to good. Wich makes me lose interest and certainly not play like i should. In both games i could have expanded above 20+ cities and easily got a tech lead, but i just couldnt be bothered
Just got one in vs Glenneyre.
My Spanish vs his English.
Pretty balanced map. I saw much more dye than whales. I start on a peninsula and move west three turns while naming a tile on the wsy settle on a balanced three tree spot. Rush warrior and move it next to a barb take it the next turn for 50g. Rush a warrior and move it sw right next to Rome. Walk in on Rome at 3600. Get out a total of four warriors netting 4 barbs and three friendlies. Lose one warrior attacking zulu next to another barb. Choke my area off from the zulu and him.
He gets Karakorum at 2900 and seven cities of gold a few turns later. I have nine cities settled at 2100 with three more settlers on two different galleons one of which he sinks but it only had one settler on it. I tech currency but make sure not to backfill into medieval. He attacks zulu repeatedly. I build three markets and two barracks then backfill into medieval. Banking hammers in four mainland cities and convert two of those into catapults. He gets the Ark. I get atlantis after getting all the 80 beaker and under techs. I get demo, monarchy, and engineering.
Get a GB from 150 cp. Use it on samurai castle when he shows up with ninja fundy knigjys. Build road to city he is about to attack and kill them with a Catapult army 22.5-12. He flips that city. He tries attacking the city connected to it but I repel the attacks with cats. Get a gs from invention and use it on industrialization at 500 ad. Switch tech to university. Doing 150g per turn before inustrialization. Have three turns till oxford is built. He quits after I use the GS.
Tech count was like 18-9 I think. GG glenn.
It wasa GG. I made a couple of stupid mistakes that cost me. I didn't settler walk enough and ended up a ways away from everyone. I should have attacked you earlier instead of waiting to attach with so much force. (3KA + Gallon fleet) I lost a couple of button races when it got hot a heavy, but it wouldn't have mattered. You were all over the map by then.

Earlier attack may or may not have worked. Both the cities you attacked wete banking hammers and one had a barracks. I knew you were bringing knights it was just a matter of when.

My China vs Mawpawks China.
I recognize the map and starting spot on turn one and move NE. He moves as well. I spot a friendly and a barb at 4000. Decide to skip over the nice three tree spot and get friendly for 25g get shown another 2 barbs. Rush warrior take down 1 flag barb at 3700 and get BW. Switch production from warrior to archers. He takes Tenochitlan. Met an injured Mawpawk warrior and kill it with archer 1-0.5 A few turns later I get a walk-in on London at 3200.
Spot Indians but will be two turns late on the walk in. Too bad as they had dye.
I keep getting spies from barbs (only thing worse is getting pottery). I spend some gold on units ( we both get 100g eventually by 2500-200 IIRC which I do by selling 3-4 units).I send two archers and camp his trees at Tenochitlan which chokes him off from my land. Build a few settlers from my cap and 100g city to put me at 8 cities. Bank hammers in two and build Barracks in London. I switched to monarchy around 2500 or so.
Get a galley from a barb on the other side of Delhi and a horse from another. Move north with galley. He double moves at london with.vet warrior army from hill and loses 6-5. I find an empty Beijing and move Gallery towards it. Attack after he moves out an archer. Get Iron Working. Realizing he is planning a legion rush. Meanwhile I am planning a catapult rush. He eventually takes Beijing back with a Legion army and KT knight.
He lands at a secondary city after finding an archer on the hill next to london. He attacks with two legion armies 15-9 wounding my vet AA twice and again at 5-9 and wins. But I have more units there so I fend him off. He goes and kills the camping archers with legion armies. Getting elites. Ninja and medic. I finish math and convert hammers into two catapult armies on the same turn tech Nav in three turns put vet AA and cats on galleon and go take his barracks city. He takes it back with Knight losing one cat army. I take it back. Put AA in and move back to my own territory with.cat army and a vet archer from london and put both in my city under seige. I kill his legion armies (one had a GG) and Mawpawk calls it. Was around 900 bc or so.
got in a frustrating game last night, my india vs gg bareback's china. good looking start as i walked in on athens. china took out the mongol cap. i had lots of revenue and assembled 2 elite HA's (1 march, 1 inf.). when he brought up his HA and archer i was close enough to kill it with one of mine. he paused then and almost quit. i sent my armies south where i thought the 3rd ai was. turns out it was a dead end and i wasted about 7 turns of my harrassing of my opponent. i had sent pikes forward to support my HA's, and he parked next to them with a HA and archers. i pulled up my HA's and killed an archer. he then used, on 2 seperate turns, a deft backpedal/attack method to kill both my armies. his timing was flawless. he did have to win 4.5-4.5 on the 2nd fight. this messed me up but i still didn't feel i was out of it. i had grown athens and had a barracks in it. he was settling cities in my sightline that would be hard to defend with me in fundy. i start building a LA force and send a settler to start populating a large empty area to the south. directly across the channel was the ark. halfway there he plops down a 5 pop city in the middle of hills (obviously for a free workshop. he then rushes an archer and steals my settler. this was too much for me and i gave in. he played a good game, albeit on easy difficulty. i cracked up afterwards reading his bio. he proudly exclaims he is the 2nd highest ranked civ player in the world. dude, you might be number 2, but not in a civ sense. i'll get him next time.
in hindsight, with athens, i should have gone the irrigation and fundy legions or cats instead of investing so much on HA's. if i had known that south was a dead end i probably would have done it.
Dont play him next time.....we've spoken on this before......the only reason you made it out of that game without a long wait is because you were losing....if you catch my drift......trust me.....3 of his losses are to me.....he pulls the flash if you go ahead.....
