Bridges betweens tiles in Civ 5
This is a feature I have wanted since Civ 2... Later in the game with the advent of advanced construction techniques and advanced materials science, super long bridges (per Hong Kong, Denmark, Japan, and the Florida Keys to bridge) could bridge 1-tile gaps.
Bridging Gilbratar, Sicily, Japans Islands, even the English Channel would really tip the balance of the game for mobility and trade, but these structures would also have to be targetable by weapons.
Love the idea. but how would AI use it? they would probably connect every singel island.:P.
AI is always dumb, but I remember in Alpha Centari (I think it was) you could build tunnels under the water, which is a feature I always wanted in one of the Civ games.

Hi there. I would like bridges as well (or some kind of ferry spot structure). I've posted a thread with the exact same topic 4 days ago. I'm glad to hear that we are what seems quite a lot who would like such a feature.
Beneath is a link to the thread, in some alternatives to bridges was proposed. Check it out.

I think the AI could save up the necessary funds and resources like a player should. These projects in real life are almost prohibitively expensive costing many billions of US dollars. Not every country can afford them and usually have to borrow heavily to build them. On top of that engineering talent may have to be brought in so only friendly countries can build such mega projects.
Also supertall buildings have the same scenarios but the cost / benefit brings much trade from the recognition such as Dubai, Malaysia and China.
Games like CitiesXL have a trade system which is partly dependent on connectedness and proximity. Having a trade system in Civ5 based on the same would be interesting, eg road types plus rail types could add trade multipliers plus trade between all cities could be based on the same multipliers. If there is no road/rail connections and no airports/ports then there would be no/minimal trade.
Anyway lets hope these ideas will be considered because the civ-series is starting to show its age when it comes to gameplay.
Civs should be able to build bridges over the rivers by researching specific techs. The bridge would allow land units as well as ship movement in the river. Enemy ships in the river could destroy bridges and cut off vital links.
That would be cool.
