Official Ending Discussion Thread SPOILERS
There are a lot of threads around here discussing the ending and I think it'd be more organized if we dedicated one thread to discussion of the ending. Did you like it, did you not, etc. etc.
Personally I thought it was a fitting end. It really shows how horrible Mafia Life can be, sometimes things are just out of your control, and there is no way around it. There is no such thing as a happy ending in the Mafia. No matter what someone does or what they live through, someone could always be there to snuff them out and it's not in your hands. I thought it was a great way to conclude the game, It's a cold world, sometimes there are things you just can't control. That's part of the life they chose and I think when Vito finds out Joe is gonna die, he realizes it too and admits it to himself.

You're right. But still it was shocking, Joe was the best game character I've ever seen, I cared if something happens to him unlike the other characters that I don't give a **** about..R.I.P Joe
I think that's why it's a good ending. Joe's death didn't have as much of an effect on me as Henry's actually but if it gave some people the feeling that they'd been kicked so hard in the nuts with a steel toed boot that they have to come here and complain about it, the developers did their job. The ending tried to evoke some emotion from people and that it did. They gave you the feelings Vito felt
"Oh thank God it's all over, we can celebrate." ......................"NO!!!!!!"
That music..the clifhanger..It's not Joe's death thats bothering me like the need to know what happened after..
Sad truth is that very i can not say that the moment i felt so good . Joe was my favorite character. I'm very curious what happend to Vito?
Vito is clearly destined to be a boss or other high ranking member. Joe's not going to die either. There would have been free roam at the end if he was for sure going to die.
Unless 2k goes bankrupt or something, I'm pretty sure we haven't seen the last of Vito Scaletta.
i thought joe was a loud obnoxious douche. i was hoping this game would live up to its open-ended promise and allow me to put a whack on the fat slob.
i liked henry though. he seemed more compatible with vito's personality.
I hate cliffhangers.
I get this feeling that they will finish the ending with DLC.
I personally didn't care about Joe, he was kinda annoying...
The ending made my eyes water
Its not a happy ending.
Its a good ending.
Thinking evrything is over after the trouble you gone thru.
But then Leo said that Joe wassent part of the deal and then the credits showed up.
2K made a cliffhanger and a good one to.
Personally, I don't think Joe is dead. He was such a great character and formed one of the best game duo's in history. It would be stupid to kill off such a great character, not to mention it would put 2K in deep sh*t with fans.
I didn't care much about Joe, really. To be honest, I could see him being killed months before the game was even released. Bit of a cliche, really.
It was Henry being killed that hit me more. His brutal death scene had me speechless. That voice actor has got some serious talent to do something like that. His screaming gave me chills. And seeing his face all cut to pieces like that... I'm usually quite immune to violence in games but that was so grizzly.
I remember having the same feeling with John Marston in RDR (just in case anyone hasn't completed that game yet) even though I had the story spoiled for me and I knew it was coming.
Maybe I was so shocked with Henry dying because I never saw it coming. Him working with the law too was quite a revelation, although it was VERY mildly intimated in the Frankie Potts story thing.
But was it confirmed whether Henry was just an informant, or if he really was an actual FBI agent all along who infiltrated the mob, like Donnie Brasco?
I've said this numerous times already, but there is no possible way Henry was a federal agent. Counting the Fatman Henry has carried out 13 contracts for Clemente. That is at least 12 people he has killed personally. There is no way a federal agent would do that and still be sanctioned in any way.

The ending was... hm how could one post it best almost Blasphemy. I have played computer games since "Ping-Pong" and must say that Joe is the deepest character I've ever seen in an Game. Alone the development he goes through socially and emotionally is beyond good and evil. I have never ever seen a character actually growing up in spirits AND in thoughts. He's a master piece, if one looks at how he actually overshadows the main character at the end with his ability to make his own decision while the main character more or less stays this robot like killing machine. I think the makers will shoot themselves a bullet up their butt if they let him die like this. Cause Joe has a huge potential which could easily be made profitable in a part 3 of their Mafia Series.
Well, we didn't actually see Joe being killed did we ? We just see how the car heads for somewhere where Joe is going to be executed.
There is still time and Vito will never let Joe die.
Whatever 2KCzech plans to do now with that cliffhanger, DLC or Mafia 3 , im pretty sure that Vito will rescue Joe somehow.
I think he will convince Leo and the chinese boss to let Joe live maybe promising them something in exchange for Joe's life.
lol not really as soon as we took seperate cars i knew something was going to happen and if you pay close attention to the look on Pepe and Leo's face they was not trying to talk to vito so then it was confirmed i felt the worse because going into the mission i was sure i was going to die then i had to kill carlo and joe was supposed to kill me. What really did it was knowing if he killed vito he would have been a capo but he didnt because he trusted vito and by trusting vito he got clipped and that made me feel how vito was feeling and im sure vito was feelin like a jacka**

Both because I read reviews saying there was a big twist at the end, the fact that Vito was narrating the entire story from somewhere, and at the end when you walk out and there are guys in black coats and cars everywhere.
It wasn't until I saw them put Joe in a different car that I knew something else was up.
reminded me of american gangster for a minute when Frank came outta church and they had the cars out there in the rain roadblockin the roads and had the cops in front of the church

The entire game is told from Vito's perspective. We never see anything Vito doesn't. We don't see his death because Vito doesn't see it.
Character deaths happening off-screen is common in movies.
The game is about mafia. There are no happy endings.
Look what i found in one of the files:
Sorry, kid. Joe wasn't part of our deal.
Frank only wanted to talk to you. Sorry, kid, it's just business.
That's what I wanted to talk to you about. Our deal only covered you. Joe has a meeting with Mr. Chu. That was the price of peace. I'm sorry, kid.
Sorry, kid. Frank only wanted to talk to you. Didn't I teach you anything about this business?
Frank only wants to talk to you. Come on, kid. Didn't I teach you anything about this business?
Sorry, kid. Joe wasn't part of our deal. They're taking him for a ride. Didn't I teach you anything about this business?
Sorry, kid. Our deal only covered you.
They're taking him for a ride, and there ain't a damn thing we can do about it. That's just the way things work. I thought you would've figured that out by now.
That's what I wanted to talk to you about. Somebody had to take the fall for what you guys did in Chinatown. That's just the way things work.
Me and Frank want to talk to you about the future, Vito. Your buddy Joe doesn't figure. That was the deal - you helped me so I helped you. Your friend needs to make his own peace.
It's funny how guys like us are called Men of Honor - you know, back in the old country. There's no such thing as honor in our world, Vito. We built our organizations on mutual interest - we all get richer quicker when we work together. But the moment that changes, well, then it's every man for himself.
Frank's prepared to wipe the slate clean, give you a fresh start. After what you and your buddies did, you're damn lucky to be alive.
1511000200:We'll make sure your buddy Joe is taken care of. Let's talk about you what comes next for you, Vito. Smart guys in this business can go a long way, so long as you never forget that it's work, it's a job, it's the way we survive. Its called "The Life" for a reason, you know. Once you're in, the only way you are ever getting out is in a coffin.
To be honest with you, kid, I'm surprised he lived this long.
Alright. So what's the big secret?
Alright, I did what you wanted, so now what?
Alright, so now what?
Alright, so what happens next?
Hey, where you going guys? The cathouse is the other... Oh ☺☺☺☺!
We thought we could break the rules... That we could make our own. But all we did was create chaos.
It slowly devoured us all.
And there was no way back.
_ there's no heaven for wiseguys...
I don't think Henry had any sympathy for Clemente. That's likely one of the reasons he didn't reveal who Vito and Joe were. He knew they were there to kill Clemente. I read somewhere many of Clemente's soldiers were unhappy with his rule, though that is speculation at this point. However, I think there's a good chance Henry had friends within the Clemente family. People he had fought with, killed with, depended on, etc. A large portion of them probably died in the bombing and Joe and Vito's subsequent escape.

While I enjoyed the story, the ending was loose and vague at best.
Honestly I was more impressed to see the ending of MAFIA 1 again with new graphics then I was for the ending in 2.
2 just builds you up, then drops you off. There was no amazing ending, not even really a twist. I knew Joe was screwed before the car even split off, so that too me was just blah.
And in all honesty i felt Joe was the worst friend ever, all he did was over complicate things half the time for Vito, I was happy he died.
And for the record, Joe and Vito were doing FINE in the MAFIA tell they let HENRY talk them into BREAKING one of the Mafia's Golden Rules, "WE DON'T SELL DRUGS!"
If Vito could have kept his head clean and not let Henry and Joe talk him into doing the dumbest thing EVER, then they BOTH would still be alive.
So in conclusion, Joe dies because he is a morron and doesn't know how to listen, and Vito is a clown and just does what he is told cause he has no spine.
The characters were just shallow and I didn't care about any of them, Hell poor Vitos mom!!! i felt bad for her and she was in the game for 20 min.

Did anyone notice that the game ends at 70%, by hte way I hated the ending!
I donīt get why everybody thinks that the ending is left open? I thought it was just a stylistic decision not to show how joe gets killed or more of vitos reaction. This way, with the camera moving away from vitos car and showing empire bay it leaves you with your own thoughts.
Probably everybody knows that in well made movies things can be even more horrible or sad when they arenīt explicitly shown rather than implicated.
Even though in never felt a real connection to joe (or vito for that matter) and i kind of had to make myself feel sad about his death (by reminding myself that he was always helping vito out of trouble with money and a roof to live under & he prably would have lived if he killed vito), this way the ending got the most possible reaction out of me.
I have to admit, that somebody on this forum had already spoiled the end for me days before the european release date, but i think you could see it all along: The trouble joe helped you with was always caused by him and his dumb ideas. Still joe managed to get out of this situations practically unscathed. All of it had to catch up with him sometime.
To sum it up: I might be wrong, but i am convinced the ending is not meant to appear open. Joe ist dead even though you dont see him die. I agree, vito would still have time to try to save him but that would mean he would have to go against the whole commision & the chinese triads. It might not fit vitos character to let joe die without fighting but maybe even he finally realizes that this time he cant help joe anymore.
Any other outcome (with joe and vito surviving) would be an unfitting happy ending and would totally ruin the already "meh" ending of a "meh" game.
Edit: I gotta admit that i wonder, why they never revealed why vito was in a crappy appartement going through old pictures and telling the story? Obviously he still lives. But what exactly happened remains a mystery. In Mafia 1 Thommy Angelo told you how everthing ended with the witness protection program and all. Its no problem that you dont know exactly what happend but no clue at all? Whenever a person in a movie or a game tells a story from a future perspective you expect to see where they are right now. Still think joes dead tho.

Amen to that brother, I can see more being added to this story at some point.

all they needed was one last cutscene much like the ones in the game where vito buys house, vito sells dope etc.
i imagine this scene would have been similar to this:
vito drives off and dosent rescue joe, continues doing missions for leo's family until leo dies, thats when vito takes his position (whatever it is i forgot if leo was don or what) and rises up.
this is the position joe always dreamed of but he got killed at least thats what everyone thought! vito as an older man is confronted by his old friend one day and joe says some words before shooting him. now this is where the credits can roll.
now admittedly if something like this could have continued the game for 5 more chapters that would be great but a cutscene at the very least would have done the job.
an ending like this could have worked with free roam too (see mafia 1)
2k all about money thats understandable but they should have been more considerate to fans and newcomers. now people just want to rent or borrow the game. cant exactly get dlc purchases that way now can you? shouldnt have messed with the mafia.
honestly i hope they dont even make a profit and heres why. if we have to wait another 6 to 8 years again just to continue this story than nobody is going to care. because it wasnt that much different or great in the first place. it is the presentation, atmosphere, architecture and automobiles that made this game worth a buy. characters and their voices were great too even though we didnt get as much time as we may have wanted with them
They didn't delete those dialogs from the others ends.
