X1950 PRO - 256Mb or 512Mb?
Are the differences significant enough to go with 512 over 256?
Yeah, I know, twice the memory size - not sure if the throughput is 256 on both cards though.
I assume that the 512 will cache the graphics making the game run smoother overall, but are we talking about significant improvements in FPS, or "just a little bit better"?
Depends on the game, but for the most part, it'll make a fair difference.
But I'd put getting at least 2gb or RAM ahead of another 256mb video memory. Naturally I've no idea how much ram you ahve, but goign from 1gb to 2gb made as much of a difference as going from my 128mb 9800pr to my 256mb x1900
The only reason to get a bunch of memory on a video card is if you have a big monitor and want to play it on high resolutions, other then that if you have a 15-20" monitor 256 will be plenty.
Thanks for the replies!
I have P4 3.4Ghz (single core) with 2Gb ram and a 20" lcd.
Typically, I don't run in the highest reso.
Overall, I'm fine - I just need a card to get me through another year or so.
So I'm guessing 256 would be fine ...unless I decide to go with dual monitors (for the non-gaming stuff) - then the 512 would be a better choice.
