After Sept 4th steam update game crashes

PC version of game has worked great until just now. I finished Chapter 10. It saved. I left the game. Noticed steam started an update. Waited until it set Mafia 2 update complete. Went back into game. Click continue story, says loading and then crashes to the desktop. I tried loading a few different chapters same issue. At this point I cannot play the game. I am not going to try starting a new game to see if that works. Here is the crash info:

Same exact thing has happened to me. I exited, started it back up, Steam updated, and now the game crashes when I try to load anything. I played through this all week with no problems and decided to play through again, and now I can't after this update.

I'm also running ATI cards with Win 7 64-bit.

I was playing earlier today with no problem.

Went to cook and eat, fired up the game and saw Steam downloaded a small update and now when i tried to continue the story in chapter 14, it just crashes with the same error you posted.

I thought maybe it was a corrupt savegame, so i decided to do the same thing as you and just restart chapter 14 over instead of just continue and still no luck.

Just posted this in the Chapter 14 pay bruno back thread, tried to start the chapter from the start and it also crashes so it's now completely useless.

I've been fairly patient even after waiting a week for the patch but this game is just rubbish, I really wanted to like it but I can't with all the stability issues.

Nvidia here with Win7 64bit.

It worked ok for me, running costa mod.

BTW i have updates off and it still updated it without my consent.

Yeah, I have the same problem. I want to replay the game again and this happened. They better get it fixed quick.

Restart Steam and it downloads more updates and is reported to download a 3rd update and work going by what people are saying here:

CONFIRMED - I'm back in after restarting STEAM and having it download a 3rd update.

Am now able to Continue Story!

Dang, i don't know why it is working for me.
I can tell u this, all i have is the costa mod, the update from yesterday if that helps you guys.

Those were the choices I tried, oddly the freeride mod does work, but non of my actual game chapters will load.

Yes, it just downloaded a second file and judging by the size it was the exe, but I still cannot load a chapter, my favorite is enemy of the state because of the winter night scene, but I can no longer load it, or any of the others.

They were working before the update, corruption is obvious, but I cannot see how.

Most likely to disable 3rd party mods but the freeride one does work though

Sorry for this problem. We've disabled the patch on Steam and we are investigating and working quickly on fixing the issue before re-issuing the patch.

Patch has fixes for Tuesday DLC release.

omg good thing I've been playing dragon age and didn't download the update yesterday, that was a close call.

I also hear the lua commands crash the game, that must suck for the people that downloaded the update.

Same here, there is a section by Freddy's bar I use for static view testing, I've gone from 30fps to 25fps, it even feels more laggy.

That update should be optional and not being delivered to those who disabled the auto-update feature in steam if its only important for that DLC

When I tried to play last night (after playing all day), I kept getting the "Game Unavailable" message. This morning I tried it again and everything seems to be working fine. I hope that this isn't a regular occurrence.

Just a heads up, reinstalling phyx fixed the fps.

Does the reinstall of PhysX help FPS even if you are not running PhysX in game? I ask because I have Mafia 2 on XP and Win 7. When I went into the XP version last night, it was incredibly slow. It had been fine before yesterday's patch. I am not running PhysX though.

Shouldn't have any effect but maybe a driver reinstall might help.

I can't load my save or a previous chapter I get the same Warning load failed. when trying to start the game over at an earlier chapter I get a crash to desktop. I have no mods...

I still have the same problem. Still can't load a save or a previous chapter. Can someone please provide a slightly newer acknowledgement that this is being addressed? I really do not want to start all over again just to have the same problem happen again at some random time. Mafia 2 can not load save games on steam version.
