Thread: So let's summarize, what did 2K leave out/cut down on?

  1. #1

So let's summarize, what did 2K leave out/cut down on?

Let's get a picture of what Mafia 2, the game we had been waiting for so long, could have been if given a half to one year more time to get finished properly.

    Left out/cut down
    1. The story feels cut, rushed and unfinished
    2. Melee weapons
    3. Countryside
    4. Train Station
    5. Subway - public transport
    6. Taxi - public transport
    7. Be able to sit
    8. Real Estate Offices (buy houses)
    9. Motor Stores (buy cars)
    10. Around 30 vehicles missing from the promised 70 (because of the "unqiue" launch DLCs?)
    11. Freeride Extreme (because they needed something exclusive for PS3, but didn't have time to make something new?)
    12. Freeride (being able to play the game with Vito when you are done with all missions)
    13. Sidemissions - very obvious that they had planned this
    14. 120 instead of 200 licensed music tracks (if I remember correct)
    15. Motorcycles (probably)
    16. Blindfire/Shooting out of cars (probably)
    17. Manual gears

    18. Barber shops (get your hair cut) - Ryan3D
    19. Multiple endings - Lee James
    20. PC steering wheel option - Adam12
    21. Joe, Henry etc. taking damage during missions (and dying) - b772734
    22. Option to change crosshairs like in first Mafia - Comp_Ali

I'm sure there is lots more, feel free to add stuff. I feel sad for the developers who had so much planned that they were not allowed to finish.

I think DonGTM sums it up nicely:

Is Mafia 2 really supposed to be what it was at release? A chopped up game product with huge plot holes, obvious missing content, like when there is dialogue that refers to things that is not available in the game. And a story which somewhat missed it's potential because of annoying execution, like missions that goes on and on in cut-scene form, but has no real game play value.

And let's talk about dlc's, it introduces a completely different character that no-one in the main story knows about, yet he lives in the main characters apartment for no apparent reason and has the exact same body as the "hero". It has gameplay situations like missions, that is referred to in the main game but dosnt work, yet magically it works for the DLC. And it introduces game play that has absolutely nothing to do with the main theme of the Mafia games (keeping it somewhat down to earth and semi realistic). Arcade game style, points counter, leaderboard etc. etc.

It feels like the Mafia franchises development has turned from caring about and loving the brand, the details and the story to what can we churn out for the sake of profit. No offense to the team behind, but this is how it feels from a gamers perspective. All it's about is sucking money out of the franchise as fast as possible, until it's dead and buried.
My opinion is that Mafia 2 should never have been made for consoles, as simple as that. Multi-platform games always gets dumbed down and features are cut to handle the low spec consoles (compared to pc).

At least stop the thinking that you need to deliver exactly the same features across all platforms. Maximize the use of all platforms instead - and if that means having a PC version that is much better than the console versions, then so be it. It's better to have a game that is fantastic on 1 platform and average on 2, than having it average across all 3 of them.

So here we will post stuff that was actually cut from the game or stuff that would just have been nice to have but might never even have been considered by 2K? Or both?

Things that were left out, not things that would be nice to have.

The first is down to personal taste. Just because you feel it felt rushed and unfinished does not mean it was.

This, also they said they would put in motorcycles when they get it to work as good as the cars. They never cut them, don't assume things you don't know 100% sure of, it makes you look stupid.

    Left out/cut down
    1. The story feels cut, rushed and unfinished Agreed
    2. Melee weapons comfirmed cut, can't hide anything from the modding community.
    3. Countryside
    4. Train Station, there is a train station, just no action there, no operational trains
    5. Subway - public transport confirmerd cut
    6. Taxi - public transport, there is some coding that suggest this may have been in at one time but not confirmed
    7. Be able to sit not sure it was ever in, but should have been
    8. Real Estate Offices (buy houses) something I would have liked to seen
    9. Motor Stores (buy cars) the carcyclopedia uses the internal that was apparantly meant for the car showroom in game
    10. Around 20 cars missing from the promised 70 (because of the "unqiue" launch DLCs?)
    11. Freeride Extreme (because they needed something exclusive for PS3) also a confirmed cut on all other platforms, mods have found it, but it's only partial
    12. Sidemissions - very obvious that they had planned this yeah, bruskie and derek come to mind, neither have work for you, yet you can deliver cars for cash, inconsistant
    13. 120 instead of 200 licensed music tracks (if I remember correct)
    14. Motorcycles (probably) said they could not make it work, yeah yeah, whatever

@RunningBare, yeah Jack was asked a question about sitting and he said that you could sit anywhere that makes sense. I wish that was in, would love to buy some food and then just sit in one of the chair and enjoy the atmosphere of the city. Shame they took it out.

So you really mean that what we got is a story that had a 700 pages script and it wasn't cut down?

Things get cut in the design stage. Things get chopped after, for cash.

Please see the older thread, with more response that was closed in favor of this one.

    This is a great thread

Elvis Songs- The 50's and no Elvis?!

More of the 50's- I thought this game spanned 10 years of his life. I swear I say the years 1955 and 1957 all over sites about Mafia 2

Ability to smoke- Would've been cool, same as eating and drinking. No stupid adverse health effects like half your life bar draining.

More variety of clothes-Except for Vangel's every store has the same option of clothes but with different colors

Shoot from cars- Really? You're going to put it in Mafia 1 and leave it out here. Everyone is going to compare this game to GTA and Mafia 1 and leaving that out is stupid

Putting bodies/guns in trunks- It'd be more realistic if you couldn't care 5 SMG's in your leather jacket but you could stop, get out, pop the trunk and grab a thompson and start blazin.

Don't loose remaining ammo in guns- Another great feature from Mafia 1 because no other game does it and it is realistic.

Some moderator nazi closed my thread, but I'll repeat it here then - it's a screenshot I found on the steam store page.

    it's this one: Removed mission

    It's a screenshot coming from a gameplay trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omY93dIH8pc

What I found funny is that this screenshot is actually a selling point from the Steam store page even though its not a situation you can experience in the game.

This game that got released is clearly not what the czech devs wanted. Their work was completely butchered by these 2K jackasses (for lack of a better word) who cut a whole lot more than just a couple of corners to get the game released.

We should have saw this coming when Vavra and half the IS team quit but our love for the original Mafia kept us blinded.

Holy ☺☺☺☺ some people can't read and just like to bash the game for no good reason, none of those are cut chapters, those are checkpoints and cutscenes, learn to read before you go posting ☺☺☺☺ you know nothing about. The game still has 15 chapters if you look, also a majority of those are still in the game.

Edit: How is Ricks load chapter mod cut from game, all games, ALL of them have debug chapters for freakin testing the levels.

Elvis and Sinatra weren't cut, they just had licenensing troubles.

And there are only 35 cars in the base game - meaning that HALF OF THE CARS WERE CUT; from 70.

did you mention the multiple endings? Or how there used to be moral descions which would affect the ending? How about reading news papers? Or how half way through the game you could chose which family you wanted to work for, which would have affected the ending? Also the side missions as well.

the devs said the ***king game was meant to finish around 1957...it finishes in 1951. can't they count or were they deliberately lying to us???
either way it smacks of foul play. i'm not impressed.

    Left out/cut down
    1. The story feels cut, rushed and unfinished
    2. Melee weapons
    3. Countryside
    4. Train Station
    5. Subway - public transport
    6. Taxi - public transport
    7. Be able to sit
    8. Real Estate Offices (buy houses)
    9. Motor Stores (buy cars)
    10. Around 20 cars missing from the promised 70 (because of the "unqiue" launch DLCs?)
    11. Freeride Extreme (because they needed something exclusive for PS3)
    12. Sidemissions - very obvious that they had planned this
    13. 120 instead of 200 licensed music tracks (if I remember correct)
    14. Motorcycles (probably)

I'm sure there is lots more, feel free to add stuff. I feel sad for the developers who had so much planned, but were not allowed to finish.
barber shops, you can see the full interiors around town but not able to get in;[ and you can get into the country side, but you need to jump from a semi to be able to, its going to be 'unlocked' from a 10 $ dlc. :[

Alright, why does people keep questions "how can you tell if the script was chopped? no one can say for sure!" and about the game spamming 10 years of Vito's life...hell, it spans 15 days, in Mafia 1 a chapter felt more envolving as it was slowly going forward...1932...then 1933..1935...and then 1938...or something that way, you felt like you were part of Tommy's life as you saw the key momments of his life..Vito's key momments were...uhh...him going to prison and Henry's death i guess...other than that i see not much point in his life...to not be like his father i guess...and to be rich? dunno, i didn't feel as connected to him as i did with Tommy, and yes, moral desitions were totally in it...like back at the Room Service chapter when Clemente uses the elevator and when it comes back up, an old lady comes outta it...in the first version you could actually decide wether or not to kill that lady, and that would have an impact on Vito, same thing happens on the chapter where you have to save Leo...i think originally you could choose, wheter or not to warn him...yes, many things were chopped...and yes, it was originally a 700 pages script...it originally had countryside...side missions...even more characters...but at the end, countryside was chopped, characters were deleted...side missiosn were completly casted out...the city itself got cutted down...features got removed...the script got reduced to a what? 300-500 pages script? but most importantly, Mafia II did a 180 turn in the wrong direction, at least in my opinion, it is a good game, but at the end, they simply didn't make a game.

I call a class action lawsuit. Not really...but someone email Joystiq and let's get answers to why this crap was cut. I'm mad.

How do you know there is(was) a countryside? Never seen anything written about it or any pictures.

It was already stated that the countryside would be in fact, smaller than in the first game, however, it would be there, but i'm pretty sure that by "smaller" countryside they didn't mean mountains on the background.

Previously we wrote about the discovery of texts from the game code to demonstrate the presence of absent things in the game.. Motor Show, you certainly noticed in the city (if not, visit the City), in-depth investigation in the city you come to a real estate agency. Autosalon may be in town only as a supplement and discovered a real estate office just as a random building, such as pizza, but not so. Furthermore, the texts of the game code to prove it and glass buildings. It's exactly the type of glass that are accessible to all businesses in the town when the load. This is an investigation of memory for the console. Furthermore, this glass shows punctuality and building their log.
    one more to the list

bullet casings and magazines disappear when they hit the ground and don't make any sound, whereas in Mafia 1 they stay on the ground, they make quite a noise and they even had physics.
Overally the game feels nerfed. They put that fancy cover system but at the same time they took out the dodge roll. You have to rely on cover, but if there isn't any you are dead.
