why only idiots play multiplayer
yes u gotta be an idiot to play civ5 in multiplayer. im one of them and wanna share my experience. and yes i made more then one or two games, i made many games in the last weeks.
Guide for idiots who wanna play multiplayer and what they have to expect in a normal expiration of a game:
- first obstacle you will face is to get a full room where 100% of the ppl can actually pick a leader without problems and everyone sees the other names.
- if that is done and the host launches, take ur hands off the keyboard, stop breathing and begin to pray...everything could help to get the game started.
- after finally everyone seems to be in the game, if ur lucky the game will actually start...or not..like often.
if one of these 3 points fails (what will happen very often), restart with point 1.
these 3 points (and their repetition), until u actually get a game started, take about an hour on average, in my experience. You gotta be a patient idiot, never forget that.
- then the lagfest begins; where it takes seconds for any unit to move and minutes between turns. be ashured that this is normal and has nothing to do with your pc and/or connection.
- while the game goes on 1 or 2 ppl crash/freeze/got sick of the lag/die of old age or whatever.
- in-between u will ocassionally get the feared loading screens for some reason where u again gotta pray that the game wont crash. if ur lucky the game will go on and only 1 or 2 ppl drop out.
- finally...you made it to turn ~100 with 3 of 6 players left. if u made it so far ur a very lucky guy. you can call urself an experienced alpha-tester now.
- but be ashured that u dont have many turns left. ur next click can be ur last where u drop on desktop, windows telling u that civ5 got problems and needs to be closed. so be carefull.
i think i made clear why only idiots play multiplayer.
my demand to get more non-idiots into multiplayer is simple.
at least give us the possibility to rejoin a running game we were in, ffs.
Loll nice description. Add the frustration of people simply leaving because they are in a bad position, time constraints etc. the inability to ever get the same people together again and you have real frustrating experience.
The more people in a multiplayer game the more problems there are, i recon.
So I've only played me and a friend of mine, plus a few AIs.
Problems in the game-creation screen like you described were in maybe 2-3 out of 20-30 games.
We always managed to start a game within lets say 10 minutes, although the loading screen IS excruciatingly long. I consider 2 Minutes long.
And there are plenty of lags while playing.
The furthest we ever got was about turn 250. The reason being that multiplayer requires much more resources than singleplayer and my friend has a weaker PC. For me it was still very much playable at that point.
Still we only got that far only once, because often times it was foreseeable that one of us could overpower the other, but that it would take another 100 turns or so.
Meh, I play with up to 3 others on a nightly basis and we've already started to finish games. We usually do Large maps, max opponents, normal amount of city states, turn timer, raging barbs, all victory conditions on, Legendary start, and a slower game speed. Depending on who is joining the session that night determines which game we play. If it's only two of us, we may restart the game if one of us gets beat down badly by barbs or another civ but generally we push on and assist each other until the industrial era where it is every man for himself.
We have had issues with being bumped to the loading screen during a session and sometimes a 10-15 second lag at the beginning of turns but it's pretty rare and usually only if a particular person is joining us that evening (his PC isn't exactly the latest or greatest). Another individual had some faulty RAM and it caused him to crash frequently but we identified the problem and since then he has been able to host sessions if/when needed. We don't invite randoms and we start and load games with the private game option selected to avoid them. Find a good group and stick with them is my suggestion, at least until the fabled MP patch is released.
While I feel for folks trying to get randoms together to play games and the significantly worse problems this presents I would just like to point out that between me and my friends (4 players) the issues are pretty mild.
Occasional issues starting the game although 2nd attempts have pretty much always worked and first attempts have been working consistently recently. Occasional crash, freeze or dropped player often seems to happen after a few hours in game and we usually call it a night, but if its not so late then we all quit back to menu and can normally restart the game with no problems.
I understand that the more players the worse it gets and I will soon be adding 2 more to my civ gaming group so will see what that does to stability.
So yeah, much room for improvement but if your playing with friends you may find you don't have to be an idiot as its actually perfectly manageable.
ok i see some ppl have lower expectations then me and are happy when they can play with 1-3 friends.
but i am a "multiplayer person"...bf2 and age of conan were some of the games i played in the last years. in bf2 64 players can play in 1 game, in aoc there can be battles with 48vs48. in aoc it took a long time that 48vs48 actually was stable and not horrible laggy but obviously 96 players is another dimension then 6!
i dont ask for 20 players in one game in civ5 i only ask for 6! 6 random ppl in one multiplayer game is nothing nowadays, and its a very very low expectation.
i, and i think many others too, just expect some basics.
like being able to rejoin a game when u had a crash instead of being frustrated cause u just wasted a few hours and the game continues without u. cause if u dont play with friends u cant just reload a game or rejoin it over steam.
btw..why is it possible to join a running game over steam when u got a friend ingame, but not over the ingame search??? BASICS
another basic, which is STANDARD nowadays...pings. it cant be that hard to implement pings in the launch room so u can kick ppl with a bad ping which will increase the chance for actually get a good game going.
and another basic..dedicated servers...which would make lag not only much less but nearly not existing.
its 9.35pm here in germany and since 9pm i cant find a game anymore. cause noone plays anymore, cause everyone is just pissed. and i dont make that up, as i said i played much mp over the last weeks and it gets worse and worse to even find ppl who wanna play.
at 7 pm today i played some and here is my experience from today:
my first game today froze in turn 28 for everyone...the turn just didnt end. we had to quit.
second game was stuck after launch and didnt start.
third game lagged so much on turn 0-2, we decided to end it. would be more avoidable when u could see pings of the different players in the launch room, like its in nearly every other game u can play in mp.
that 3 attempts took me about an hour until at 8 pm. i just needed a rest from all this fun so i made a break at until 9 pm, when i came back on and realized there r no more games to join, as written above.
I certainly sympathize with the problems you have had, and they certainly do exist, though in my experience, playing on the league they are less prevalent as most players have above average computers and low lag internet connections.
All those games you mention though do have one thing in common, they are all server based games, you would never have 50 plus people in any peer to peer game like Civ. And unfortunatelay while I have always pushed for Civ to have dedicated servers, that takes alot of money to put in place, and neither 2K nor firaxis has any history of running dedicated servers. So I highly doubt we will see anything but p2p games from them.
Given that I do expect that the Steamworks driven Civ5 should at least be as stable and functional as the Gamespy powered Civ4 was, meaning we should have good stable 10 player games. And right now 4 player games is as good as we reasonably can expect. So alot of work has to be done, but the next patch is focused on AI and diplomacy so MP will have to wait a bit longer it seems.
I wooder if this is the case in FPS game . . .

I would pay for a mp patch with good MP and dedicated server.
I would say pay a monthly fee to have my games hosted online. OMG THIS THIS THIS THIS

Lol really funny post well said!! truth be told we were promised an amazing MP experience and got something worse than Alpha instead...and all this for $50
I've had some really good MP games so far. In the 2 player vs 6 AI game I was in last night on emperor, I had the chinese and the french declare war on me and they not only halted my expansion, but their combined forces razed a newer city I had placed as an outpost and the french rolled out their musketeers wiping my attacking forces on 3 seperate occasions in an amazing display of tactics. If I didn't hold the inner lake and a southern chokepoint w/citadel, I think my core cities would have been in trouble. I'm still able to fill in my empire with some ICS, but expansion outside of my borders has halted due to their combined might.

OK, I retract my former statement in this thread as the last two sessions we have tried to play have been utter fails, multiple fails trying to start the game up, if we get in game it runs for a couple of turns and a player drops and is unable to rejoin EVER. Game simply stops accepting commands to units build order etc. fail, fail, frustration, frustration, wasted hours. Grrrrr
This has been happening both when trying to continue existing games and start new games even on smaller maps with fewer AIs. Now my friends are talking about shelving the game due to the frustration level.
