Squared Circle Insider Talks With The Toughs.

Our Insider talks to Broderick, Mayhem, Ace Lara Grey and Birdy.

What's the best memory you'll take from Newcastle?

Br: Debuting, and feeling that instant fear and loathing from the crowd. I've always prided myself on playing a pretty good bad guy, but it doesn't even feel like work when the crowd meet you half way- and the Geordies did that!

Mh: The cheers my feud with Ace get, anywhere in the world, are intense and amazing... but in Newcastle? They took the volume to eleven and we fed off every morsel of it. A little of my heart will remain here for the rest of my life.

Ac: The final episode, easily. I didn't get to wrestle, just like with the first show to come from the UA, and I think it was fitting that I went out in a promo because I always did my best talking here. Same as Chris (Mayhem), I'll be leaving a piece of myself here.

LG: The first night with the title, because of the unique position I was in. Being a heel, but also being a trailblazer to some of the crowd- particularly the young females- was incredible. You'd be getting booed by some and cheered by others. The hardest part of staying in character before a show is some young girl saying she wants to be just like you when she's older.

By: Similar to Hannah (Lara Grey), it's to do with the perception of us as trailblazers. We made a Women's Division that any promotion anywhere could be proud of and I don't think it would have been as easy without such a supportive, forward-thinking crowd. Jackie (Compton),Eddie (Hamer), Ace and people like that helped... but the crowd sold it for us on a completely different level. I owe them my career, in a way.

How Do You Feel About Ending The Cycle In Canada?

Br: As a Canadian, it's an honour. Part of why I left was that I felt I'd done it all over here. I had a chip on my shoulder and an attitude in my pocket. I've been humbled in a few ways over the past few years. Going home to Canada now, to revel in it some more as champion and end the Cycle with my head held high, is a position I'm thankful to God I'm getting.

Mh: I'm also Canadian, obviously, but for me it's more about going back to maybe show some people. I was at a low ebb and the dirt sheets were writing things. I was close to quitting and now I'm where I always thought I wasn't going to be.

Ac: I love Canada. It has so many links to The Deck... and to return there essentially as a part of the stable that is so beloved is a nice position to be in. I hope they're ready for us, to be honest. We're aiming to please.

LG: My family are flying out to see it! First time they've done that, typical that it should be the one time I'm not a few hours down the motorway. Toronto is a lot like Liverpool, too, so it's almost like home; lots of culture and glamour and music and laughter. I'll have to pretend I'm against all of it while in character, though, obviously.

Br: I'm honestly just happy to be there, in all honesty. I'm not supposed to be challenging for a World Title- much less one I've already held- it's just absurd. I'll try my best, though, and I couldn't be in better hands with Hannah.

Who's Your #1 Bet For A UNION Award?

Br: Broderick. Bro. Der. Ick. Male Superstar of the Year. Who else? Easy choice.

Mh: I'd like to think I'll win Promo of the Year. *laughs* But, yeah, I have to go with Hannah for Female Superstar of the Year.

Ac: Birdy. She's also from Sheffield, and I trained her and continue to train with her. She'd not talk to me if I voted Hannah, and she also wouldn't vote for me.

LG: Broderick and Eddie Hamer for Promo of the Year. The one where he wrote him out of action! It gave me goosebumps. It was so real at the time. A part of everyone actually kind of hated him for it.

Br: I have to go with Feud of the Year, Ace and Mayhem. It would have been Gage and Riske... but that shock ending and them teaming up! So many convoluted twists! I love it.

A big thank you to all superstars for answering! More Insider interviews, news and lists coming in the second cycle, and don't forget to look out for our post-HM17 musings!

Interesting choices, there! I have a feeling at least one of those may be right on the money, actually.

They're all about personal preference so either reason for voting for them is perfectly valid! Plus voting for them for out of kayfabe also shows that they're multi-dimensional characters rather than just names on a screen, which is what I was trying to achieve. Also glad I could offer inspiration for your own diary!

    UNION Wrestling: HEAVY METAL 2017

Live From The Ricoh Coliseum, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

    (Wiki Entry)

    Card:

    # Result Stipulation(s) Finish
1D MATSUDA (c) def. SKORCH1 Brawl Championship Invitational Match SKORCH pinned following suplex through ladder
2 BULL FRASER def. MAYHEM (c) (with ACE) Inter Championship Singles Match FRASER pinned MAYHEM following Bulldozer
3 THE COALITION (c) def. HDMC Tag Team Championship Tornado Hardcore Brawl BANE pinned HD following a Chokeslam
4 LARA GREY (c) def. BIRDY Women's World Championship Cell Match GREY pinned BIRDY following a Greyhug Slam
5 TAKI def. BRITTANY GUILE Falls Count Anywhere Match TAKI knocked GUILE out against the guard rail and applied a Taki Lock
6 THE UNITED KINGDOM def. CHRISTIAN & CHRIS JERICHO Tornado Tag Cell Grudge Match RAFE DANIELS pinned CHRISTIAN following Righteous Power
7 BRODERICK (c) def. THE MAVERICK World Championship Hardcore Brawl BRODERICK pinned MAVERICK following a Crater Maker2

    D= Dark match
1= UW roster member expected to make full debut later this month
2= Virgil Baker cashed in Banker Briefcase to become a two-time World Championship holder!

    Our Highlights:

    • It was great to see UW roster member, one of many hindered by the rebranding agreement, SKORCH make his UNION bow in the live fan event's dark match against Brawl Champion MATSUDA... even if it was in a losing effort.
    • Congratulations to new Inter Champion BULL FRASER, who bested MAYHEM even though he had ACE in this corner. Then again, ACE didn't interfere and MAYHEM actually lambasted him for it after the match, with the Light in the Darkness responding drily; "You never asked me to."
    • Commiserations to the team of HD and MC, who pushed Tag Team Champions THE COALITION to the brink in their match.
    • The result aside, both BIRDY and Women's World Champion LARA GREY deserve the plaudits and adulation coming their way for spearheading a successful Women's Division that has become one of the highlights of the promotion.
    • Likewise to TAKI and BRITTANY GUILE... although we'd prefer it if they kept to a less violent style in the future as I'm not sure any of our hearts can take much more of the hardcore stuff.
    • It was great to see THE UNITED KINGDOM redeem their recent behaviour in victory, once again aligning with the fans and raising the hands of their vanquished foes at the end of their battle in the cell.
    • Well done, now former Temp GM MAVERICK, for masterminding a quite incredible ploy to remove BRODERICK from his position at the head of the table. Allowing himself to be beaten, only to attack his opponent after the bell and call for VIRGIL BAKER was a masterstroke, but quite underhanded and not what we expect from our authority figure. His new found free time comes just in time for him to deal with the disgruntled former World Champion.
    • Congratulations to VIRGIL BAKER on becoming a two-time champ, the first one in our burgeoning promotion!

I can't reveal why until the post after the next one... but your boy also isn't done for the evening. Glad you enjoyed the show, and the thread! The last few posts are coming, then it's just a case of sobbing over a bottle of Southern Comfort until tomorrow brings the shiny new game.

Squared Circle Insider Post-Heavy Metal 17 Special.

    Baker's Dozen.

So, it turns out only thirteen people including the man himself knew about the successful cash in that left us all reeling at the end of Heavy Metal 17. The whole idea, having Maverick pretend his plan was to end Broderick's title reign himself only to call in Baker, was hatched by twelve higher ups at UNION Wrestling including Eddie and Jordan "Cowpoke" Hamer, Ace and Mav himself. Yep, Baker didn't even know. He just got handed a plane ticket after LFTU went off the air.

Funny how he was called unlucky for winning the Money In The Bank (later retconned to simply Bank) at a time when the partnership was becoming less overt and pleasing to the UW management. It ended up being luck that they wanted to get rid of it for a clean break, here, that has earned him his second World Championship.

A Few Hints For Cycle Two?

Stories wrapping up are all fine, but there was a few hints and nods to potential future angles in the words of several superstars at this event. While arguing with Ace after his Inter Championship loss, for example, Mayhem told Ace they'd need a new bauble, recommending the scalp of "another unlikely alliance". Unlikely alliances sometimes come in the form of coalitions. The Deck for Tag Team Champions?

Elsewhere, Taki screamed "IT IS MY TURN NOW!" after submitting Brittany Guile, hinting at a Women's World Championship challenge, and Broderick ended the show with a guttural call for Maverick to come to him. Ouch for the now former temp GM.

    Christian Sticking Around?

Rumours are flying about Jason Reso and whether he's really now a fully signed up member of the roster at UW. He ended his part of the show helping The UK turn face... but then stood with the duo to applaud and bid farewell to Jericho. Why would he do that if he was also leaving? There was no follow up where Rafe Daniels and Davey Mac did the same for him, fuelling the fire further.

Tyson Kidd was apparently supposed to be popping up at the show, too. He's been training with several specialists for a light to return to in-ring action with the promotion, but it would seem that this latest no-show further hints that they may not be prepared to risk his health in this way.

    A New Era.

UNION Wrestling have trademarked the name of "New-UNION Era" with regards to marketing and merchandise, and terrible pun aside there's many wondering what exactly this will entail. We know very little, other than it's set to "go live" over this weekend.

Male Superstar of the Year: Virgil Baker

Baker began and ended the First Cycle as World Champion. He may have been a bit quiet following his return but overall it's been a year to remember for the Alabama Smash'n'Slamma!

Female Superstar of the Year: Lara Grey

Grey began the Cycle as a prospect for the future, a woman of imposing size but impressive grace in her destructive art. The she went in for the kill. She won the Women's Division Tourney, earning the match that would see her crowned Women's World Champion. She's gone from strength to strength in a division filled with absolute standouts.

Team of the Year: The Coalition

Many teams made an impression this year, but only The Coalition's impression is one we'll worry may never stop catching the eye. Their name is a fitting one, because how can an alliance between a smooth talking Han Solo cosplaying politicking schemer and a behemoth with very little but animal instinct driving him last? A little longer, we hope deep down, because they are entertaining together.

Match of the Year: Ace vs. Mayhem Ironman Match @ Open Challenge 2017

When the match ended and neither man was able to get up, I was unsure how to feel. I wasn't expecting a draw. We all knew the duo were going to fight in Japan for a little while, but this seemed real. It was visceral reminder of the pain and sacrifice of the art, but it felt like they were actually hurting from the war, the fight, the moves. Very few matches reach that plateau of realism. This one did and then some.

Feud of the Year: Birdy vs Lara Grey

Who else? This feud was arguably the biggest part of the big bang that was the Women's Division expansion in this Cycle. The two women work so well together, despite being good friends in real life you can believe that they wanted to hurt each other. That title change at Open Challenge? Heart breaking, exhilarating, infuriating, brilliant... that was the feud in a nutshell.

Moment of the Year: The Dudley Boyz Debut!

D-VON... GET THE TABLES! And they did, as well. The Dudley's visit to UNION Wrestling (or PWU as it was then) was short and bittersweet, but they'll forever be Tag Team Champions on the list of former holders of the straps, and they'll always be remembered for putting The Misfits in their place during a time they were able to squeeze out of seemingly anything relatively unscathed.

Promo of the Year: Broderick Ends The Reign of Eddie Hamer

Get this, Broderick actually hurt Eddie in this promo. He slammed him too hard, and knew right away he'd done damage. So what did he do? Ignore it and potentially risk his health? Break character and ruin the momentum? Brod grabbed Hamer gently by the throat, not that it looked gently, and bared his teeth less than an inch from his face. What we didn't see was the "You okay?" escape his lips. We saw a man who'd grown tired of talking and had snapped. That it came after the two had flayed each other mercilessly with words made it just more sweet.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? WE THINK THOSE ARE ABOUT RIGHT, AND NOT JUST BECAUSE WE'RE SCARED OF THE WINNERS!

SCI will return with more in the Second Cycle. Thank you for reading!

    Final Thoughts On The Thread

RLS' Final Thoughts On The 2K17 Thread.

If you'd have told me on day one last year that I'd be posting here for the last time the day before the launch of 2K18, I doubt I'd have believed you. It was certainly my ambition when starting the thread, but would I be able to see it through? Would nothing get in the way?

As it turned out, things did, at times. I had to take time away for mental health reasons, more than once. Depression is a hell of an illness but it does force you to appreciate the things in your life that you remain passionate about even at your lowest. Gaming, and the creation of a living, breathing universe within, it seems, is one of those things for me. WWE 2K17 allowed me to create something I think has proven rather good. A promotion filled with complicated characters. Maybe not the best looking CAWs on the market, but possibly some of the most articulate, complicated, realistically irrational and fragile.

UNION Wrestling began as a side-project for me, a little hobby I'd keep adding to over time. It became something more important. I've put a lot of time, effort and emotion into this, which I'm sure isn't the coolest or most socially braggable thing to say, but I'm proud of what I've achieved over six pages on a dark forum, and I'm looking forward to doing it all again.

Thank you for reading. See you in 2K18!

Standing O for this thread RLS. I really enjoyed reading this over the span of time I've been here on this forum. Glad you pulled through with any issue you've had. Can't wait to see what you come up with for 2k18.
